FINAL TEST
ADVANCED ENGLISH GRAMMAR 2021
Time: 90 minutes

A. In each of the following pairs, (1) embed a subordinate counterpart of the main
clause with appropriate subordinator and (2) identify the clause type (declarative,
closed interrogative, open interrogative, or exclamative) and the function of the
subordinate clause (subject, object, complement of verb, complement of noun, etc.)
(@4 points
Total 20 points).

For example: a. What a smart student she is.

b. I cannot forget what a smart student she is.
Clause type & function: exclamative as an internal complement of verb

1. a. Did you sleep last night?

b. He wondered whether you slept last night. .
Clause type & function: Closed interrogative as internal complement of verb. .
2. a. How far the station was.
b. She was amazed at how far the ship harbour was.
. Clause type & function: Exclamative content clause as the complement of adjective. .
3. a. What can you do about it?
b. I’m not sure whether you can do about it. .
Clause type & function: Closed interrogative as the complement of adjective. .
4. a. He has solved the problem.
b. You cannot deny the fact that he has solved the problem. .
Clause type & function: Declarative content clause as the complement of noun. .
5. a. Why did they stop reconstructing?
b. It remains unclear why they stopped reconstructing. .
Clause type & function: Open interrogative as the extraposed subject. .

B. Analyze the following sentences. Identify the main clause and the content or relative
clauses. You also need to decide whether the sentences can be categorized into
content clauses, relative clauses or ambiguous sentences. Give evidence in support
of your answers (@7.5 points Total: 15 points).

For example: The fact (that it is illegal) did not seem to bother them.
main cl. content clause main clause

Evidence: the semantics of that is illegal is the content of the fact. It is not the extension or
additional information of the fact.

1
1. It is the best music which I have listen all year.
Main clause relative clause

Evidence : “it is the best music” is the main clause with antecedent “music”, and it is a
noun phrase (the best music). The relative clause “which I have listen all year” modified
the antecedent. We understand that it is the best music that I have ever listen.
2. Do you remember the time we first went out together?
Content clause main clause
Or...
An ambiguous sentence.
Evidence : We don't know what sort of clause it is because there are no signals of a
content clause or a relative clause. Besides, it was a statement (an interrogative
sentence), not a clause in my opinion.
C. Read the following passage and find 5 sentences containing non-finite clauses. You
need to rewrite the sentences and underline the non-finite clauses. Then, identify their
categories (to-infinitival, gerund participial, past participial, or bare infinitival), and
analyze their functions (subject, extraposed subject, object, extraposed object,
complement, modifier or adjunct) and identify their categories (@ 4 points  total 20
points)

For example: To speak in class is difficult for some children but not for Charlie (to infinitival
as subject)

For some students, studying grammar is quite challenging and even frustrating. This is
because the students need to read some grammar books and do exercises often. In addition,
to gain good score during the exam, students are also required to prepare their exam both
physically and mentally. In some words, it can be said that well prepared students do their test
better than those who come to the exam with no preparation. During the test, students should
come to the class on time and do not come late. If you do so, it will influence your memory
and make you panic in doing the exam. When the examiner hands you a paper, read the
instruction carefully. Understanding the instruction will ease you to do the test.

complement of preposition).

(gerund-participal as the subject, bare infinitivals as the complement of modal auxiliary
‘will’, bare-infinitival as the complement of “ease”).

2
D. Make 2 sentences containing a simple and a complex catenative construction. You
need to include the explanation of semantic relation between the (intervening) noun
phrase and the verb(s) (@ 10 points  Total 20 points).

For example:
A complex catenative construction
We arranged for them to meet the manager
Explanation: the intervening NP (them) is preceded by the subordinator for. This indicates
clearly that the intervening NP (them) belongs syntactically in the embedded clause (to meet
the manager), as a subject.

1. Make a sentence of a simple catenative construction with the head verb “seem”.
- Amel seemed to wake up early
Explanation : In a basic catenative structure, there is no intervening. This is a raised subject that has no
meaningful relationship to the verb. The word “seem” is syntactically in the matrix clause but
semantically in the embedded sentence.

2. Make a sentence of a complex catenative construction with the head verb “urge”.
- Tina urged us to be examined by a doctor.
Explanation : Because this is not a grammatical ingredient, it cannot be used as a complement to be. It isn't
a component since it's a combination of two ocomplements of urged: us is the object, and to be
examined by a doctor is a non-finite phrase that serves as a catenative complement.
