CONSTRUCTION MASTER SPECIFICATIONS

QUIN A. SAJORDA

Foreword
The introduction of Construction Master Specification is an answer to the
long-felt need of the construction industry, especially of the design professionals
for this kind of reference material. Considering the universally accepted CSI
(Construction Specification Institute) Format, the systematic arrangement of
specifications thus paved the way towards “specs' automation," thus relieving the
architects and engineers of the boredom and concomitant drudgery about writing
specifications. CSI format was formed in 1963 and my becoming a member since
1973 has been most rewarding.

Learning the CSI format at heart will, introduce the architects and engineers
to the benefit of long studies by various groups that evolved to what is now known
as the Construction Specification Institute, the clearing house for specifications.

Note that even the Architectural Graphics Standards and the Sweet’s
Catalog, considered as musts in an architect’s library, are following the CSI Format
in the divisioning of its graphic details and product presentations respectively.

This book clearly provides you with a concrete example of how the CSI
format is used and utilized. It is to be expected, for example, that a sole
manufacturer of various products will have its products appearing on different
divisions instead of being lumped in only one, depending on which area such
product may be applicable.

One must take note, however, that while the author attempts to provide a
comprehensive presentation of the different Divisions and Sections under the CSI
format, its use would largely depend on the needs of the specific projects being
prepared. Divisions are fixed and should not be altered. Where it is not
applicable, it should either be deleted, or if shown, should be clearly identified as
not part of the specification: e.g., DIVISION 12 FURNISHINGS (not applicable)

The value of this book cannot be overemphasized. With the difficulty in

preparing detailed specification and the absence of comprehensive building
construction master specifications, this ready reference aid is very important and
timely. Considering the multitude of construction materials now flooding the
market, an architect, and engineer, or even a building owner would have a difficulty
in making choices in terms of type, quality and availability. With their limited time,
identifying materials is indeed a problem.

This book simply answers this problem.

Welcome to the Construction Master Specifications and the CSI Format. I

assure you that going through this book will be a rewarding experience as it was for
me. Think, live, breathe, write CSI, and it will be a long and fruitful love-
encounter that once imbibed will never be shaken.

With this book your specification and specification writing will never be the
same again.
