The Self and Various Perspective: The Importance of Knowing Yourself

An individual’s self-concept is the core of his personality. It affects every aspect of

human behavior: the ability to learn, the capacity to grow and change. A strong, positive
self-image is the best possible preparation for success in life (Joyce Brothers). Take a
moment to find yourself. Take a moment to get to know yourself and who you truly are.
Know yourself, know thyself and be yourself. We say act ourself, not acknowledging
someone have never met themselves. Maybe it’s dumb to look for signs from the universe to
tell us what we really want. Maybe we already know that deep down.

Start looking inside, feel your heartbeat all over your body. Feel your breath as it rises from the
bottom of your stomach, rises to your chest, and the warm air leaves your lips. Be careful. Be you
Be you Take a moment to get to know yourself and who you really are. Being present within
the here and now, allows us to ignore everything that is not in ourselves. We remove
ourselves from the past, you stop looking to the future, and you disconnect from the outside
world and society that harms us.
Know yourself, know thyself, and be yourself. In Ancient Greece, the philosopher
Socrates famously declared that the unexamined life was not worth living. Asked to sum up
what  all philosophical commandments could be reduced to, he replied: ‘Know yourself.’
Knowing yourself has extraordinary prestige in our culture. It has been framed as quite
literally the meaning of life. If you know yourself, you will come to realize that everything
that you need is within you. All of the power in the world lies within each and every one of
us.
You cannot please everyone and you shouldn’t try to. You will lose yourself in the
maze of what everyone else wants from or for you. One day you’ll wake up and see a
stranger staring back at you in the mirror. You’ll wonder who you are when you take away
everything people have made you to be. Don’t do that to yourself. Don’t carry that kind of
burden around for the rest of your life. Be who you are. Love what makes you who you are.
Give yourself time to discover who you want to be and what you’d like to do. Don’t let
anyone else take the reins of your life. They were meant for you and only you. You have to
forge the future you desire. You have to find and create your version of happiness. It’s okay
if they don’t get you. All that really matters is that you understand you and are happy with
yourself. “Don’t lose your soul trying to make everyone else happy. Be yourself. Be happy. Be
free and you will touch lives just as you are. For who you are is beautiful and one of a kind.”
(Terence Olivier, Rainbow Warriors,2019)
We say act ourselves, not acknowledging someone have never met themselves.
Those who truly know they are didn’t always have the easiest path or journey to self-
actualization. They fought with society and the image that they were told to be, and to play
the part. They had battles with their emotions, some they won and many they lost. They
went to war with their insecurities, a victory often hard won. We don’t meet or get to know
ourselves just by being born. Birth is something that is gifted, a gift that is unknown to us,
at least until we have enough self-awareness to realize the blessing of what is means to be
alive. However, being alive and its accomplice of what is called life, is still incomplete if you
never find your reason of why. Of why you are, who you are, of why you were gifted life
and to know what it means to be you. You are a unique individual with thoughts, emotions
and behaviors independent of your family, friends and classmates. You have the ability to
see, understand, and know the world around you in a way only you can. You have the
ability to grow, change, thrive, and set goals for yourself. You developed these abilities,
strengths, and knowledge over your lifetime. Think back to when you were in a kinder or
elementary. You didn’t become the person you are today all on your own. Most likely, there
were adults in your life that helped you to realize these abilities and strengths that you were
developing. Maybe a teacher helped you see your artistic ability, or a family or friends that
encouraged you to try to join in a different contest or sports. Cultural and family traditions
and beliefs also played a role in the person you’ve become. You are an individual who has
used your experiences to develop a sense of self.
Maybe it’s dumb to look for signs from the universe to tell us what we really want.
Maybe we already know that deep down. Let’s just be who we really are. It takes
continuous self-reflection to get to know who you are. If you are like me, this self-reflection
is often un-voluntary and begins to force itself from the deepest cracks of your internal
power, which is, at the very least, a sign of order. That life is okay the way that it is.
Everything that is outside of your own being begins to show itself as it truly is. They are
things that you can mold, bend and adjust according to fit into your reality. Nothing outside
of yourself has any dictation on who you are and how you go about your life. When you
know yourself, you will realize this, that life is so simple and that you control your own
destiny.

Thus, when we get to know ourselves, we get to know the world. We start to see
other people as a brother and sisters. We begin to see life in the way that it is, that we are
all truly connected and infinite beings. Knowing yourself is the greatest weapon that you can
have in your life. Its power lies in your strength and the confidence gained when you truly,
know you. Rene Descartes said “I think, therefore I am.”, I say “Focus on who you are,
block everything else out, nothing else matters.”
