Death Valley is also the driest place in North America. Average yearly
rainfall is less than 51 millimeters (2 inches). There are rivers in Death
Valley, but they only flow briefly during the winter – and only in very wet
years.
So why is Death Valley so hot and dry? The reason is its geography.
Parts of Death Valley are very low. The lowest place in the Western
Hemisphere is on the valley floor (86 meters – 282 feet – below sea
level). On all sides are high mountains. These mountains keep cool winds
and rain out of the valley.
