Carbon Cycle
1. Where is carbon stored on earth? (Identify 3 places)
On Earth, carbon is stored within the atmosphere, in the ocean, and inside organisms.
2. An outline of the carbon cycle is shown below. The arrows indicate the flow of carbon through the
cycle. Fill in the boxes and/or write on the arrows using the following words. Use the diagram in
the text on p. 50 as a guide.
3. Write down three ways in which carbon dioxide is put into the atmosphere
1. Cellular respiration
2. Volcanic activity
3. Combustion of fossil fuels
4. Write down two ways that carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere
1. Photosynthesis
2. Dissolves into the ocean
5. Explain the two ways by which humans impact the carbon cycle.
6. There is a finite number of carbon atoms in the world. That means an atom of
carbon that is in a molecule in your body may actually have been a part of a
dinosaur that lived millions of years ago! Hard to believe – but true!
Use your knowledge of the carbon cycle to create a flow chart or concept map
showing how it is possible that an atom of carbon that was once part of a dinosaur
could now be in one of your own cells.
Be sure to clearly demonstrate your knowledge of ecological processes by referring to
specific concepts and using key terms covered in the course. Use arrows to show
the direction in which carbon is travelling.
