The Symbology of Dreams

INTRODUCTION

Gnosis teaches that there exists many types of dreams which modern psychology of
the occidental hemisphere radically ignore. Unquestionably dreams are of a diverse
specific quality. Due to the concrete fact that they are intimately related to every one of
the psychic centres of the human organism, most dreams are related with the motor
instinctive centre; that is, the echo of things seen during the day, of simple sensations
and movements, an astral repetition of what we live daily.

Some experiences of an emotional type, such as fear, which does so much damage to
humanity, have their relationship with those chaotic dreams of the instinctive motor
centre. There exists then emotional, sexual and intellectual, moral and instinctive
dreams. The most important dreams are the intimate experiences of the being which
are related to the two superior centres: the superior emotional; and the superior
mental. The language of drams is similar with the langueage of the biblical parables.
Those who interpret everything literally think that the planter of the Christic
evangelical went to plant and that the seed fell on a rocky field, etc. They don't
understand the sense of the parable, because this in itself belongs to the superior
emotional centre.

We must remember that every dream, no matter how absurd or incoherent it may be,
has some meaning which not only indicates the psychic centre to which it is
associated, but also the psychological state of such centre.

Plato said: “Man is known by his dreams.”

At the time of awakening from a normal sleep, we must not move because it is known
that such a movement makes us lose our memories of our sleeping hours.

The Gnostic should write down carefully all the details of the dream or dreams in a
notebook, which he or she should place under the pillow for this purpose. In this
manner, they could keep a record of their intimate progress in the Yoga of dreams.
Even if only a few fragments of the dreams are in our memories, these should be
carefully registered. Particularly very interesting are those dramas that seem to come
out of other centuries or are being developed in other environments which have
nothing to do with the present vigil existence of the dreamer.
We have to be in a state of alert perception, alert novelty, and put a special attention
to the study of those details which include specific matters such as talks, meetings,
temples, unusual activities in relation to others, etc.

When we have achieved the oniric memory and every possibility of forgetting is
eliminated, the process of symbolization will open the road to revelation.

The basis science of the interpretation of dreams we should find in the law of the
philosophic analogies, in the law of the analogies of the contraries and the law of the
correspondences and numerology.

The astral images reflected in the magic mirror of imagination are not to be translated
literally, for they are symbolic representations of the archetypal ideas and should be
utilized in the same manner that a mathematician utilizes the algebraic symbols. We
must affirm that such types of ideas descend from the pure spiritual world.

Obviously, the archetypal ideas which descend from the being inform us of our
psychological state of such centre of the physical machine, over very intimate esoteric
matters, over possible successes or dangers, etc., always dressed up in the garment of
symbolism.

To open these astral symbols, such figures or scenes with the purposes of extracting
the essential idea is only possible throughout “the confrontative and logical
meditation of the being.”
