I. What I Need to Know
Philippine Opera
Opera is part of the Western classical music form and tradition. It started in Italy
at the end of the 16th century and soon spread throughtout the rest of Europe. White
English, French, and Italian operas were being presented. It was the Italian opera that
captured the creative imagination of composers, librettists, and singers alike.
The opera is an art and musical form in which singers and musicians perform a
dramatic work combining text(called libretto) and a musical score, usually in an elaborate
theatrical setting. It incorporates many of the elements of spoken theater, such as acting,
scenery, costumes, and sometimes dance. The performace is typically given in an opera
house, cultural center, theater, or auditorium. It is accompanied by an orchestra or smaller
musical ensemble, and the dialogue is entirely sung and not spoken.
The emergence of the Filipino opera started during the middle part of the 19 th century.
Foreign performers, including instrumental virtuosi, as well as opera singers and Spanish
zarzuela performers came to the country to perform for enthusiastic audience.

are shown on TV or made into films. Thus, many Filipinos are acquainted with
musical shows like “Ms. Saigon,” “Les Miserables,” “Phantom of the Opera,” or
“The High School Musical.”

V. What is it
What is musical play?
In a musical play, an idea is matched with an instrumental music or song that carries a
similar theme, and is used to serve either as accompaniment or as carrier of dialogue. The
idea that surfaces or that is accompanied by music is then presented in live performance or a
recorded one for a scheduled show.
How are theatrical elements in a selected part of a musical play combined with music
and media?
In a musical play, theartrical elements like dialogue, acting, scenery, and lighting are
combined with music. Dialogue surfaces as lyrics of a song. Its melody is used to highlight
mood and tone. Acting is accompanied with either songs or instrumental music. Scenery is
presented using props that symbolize locations like trees for a park, a chair or table for a part
of a house, or a huge image of a car for street, etc. Lighting and other forms of sound are also
added to produce effects. More importantly, instrumental music that carries parallel themes is
included to establish the play’s main theme. According to Kenny Chan of Theatre Ontario,
music used to establish mood, and to provide background noise. Music may be presented live
or recorded.
