Introductory Message

Welcome to Mathematics for Grade 7!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the Schools
Division of Cadiz City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through the
Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide the
learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet
the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to guide

the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the contextualized
resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in acquiring the lifelong
learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Mathematics Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal or no
face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to the learners
with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Mathematics Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning even if
you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and engaging
activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and understand
the instructions then perform the activities and answer the assessments. This will be
returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Multiplying Polynomials
a. monomial by another monomial
b. monomial by a polynomial with more than one term

I. Learning Competency with Code

Multiplies and Divides Polynomial (M7AL-IIe-2)

II. Background Information for Learners

Multiplying polynomials is just as easy as multiplying numbers. The laws on
exponents that you’ve just previously learned will help you perform the operation.
Aside from the traditional way of multiplying polynomials, there are other ways of
doing it like the use of tiles and the FOIL (F-first terms, O-outer terms, I-Inner
terms, L-last terms) method.
The following rules will guide you in multiplying polynomials.
A. To multiply a monomial by another monomial, simply multiply the numerical
coefficients then multiply the literal coefficients by applying the basic laws of
exponent.

Examples:
1) (𝑥𝑥 2 )(𝑥𝑥 3 ) = 𝑥𝑥 5
2) (-3𝑥𝑥 2 )(4𝑥𝑥 5 ) = -12𝑥𝑥 7
3) (6𝑥𝑥 2 𝑦𝑦 3 )(3𝑥𝑥 5 𝑦𝑦) = 18𝑥𝑥 7 𝑦𝑦 4 P

B. To multiply a monomial by a polynomial, simply apply the distributive property

and follow the rule in multiplying monomial by a monomial.

Examples:
1) 𝑥𝑥(𝑥𝑥 + 5) = 𝑥𝑥 2 + 5𝑥𝑥
2) 2𝑥𝑥 (𝑥𝑥 3 − 5𝑥𝑥 + 4) = 2𝑥𝑥 4 − 10𝑥𝑥 2 + 8𝑥𝑥
3) -2𝑥𝑥 2 𝑦𝑦(3𝑥𝑥𝑦𝑦 3 − 2𝑥𝑥 + 4𝑦𝑦 4 ) = -6𝑥𝑥 3 𝑦𝑦 4 + 4𝑥𝑥 3 𝑦𝑦 − 8𝑥𝑥 2 𝑦𝑦 5

Multiplying Polynomials
a. binomial by binomial
b. polynomial with more than one term to polynomial with three or
more terms

I. Learning Competency with Code

Multiplies and Divides Polynomial (M7AL-IIe-2)

II. Background Information for Learners

Apart from the rules that you have learned in multiplying polynomials, here
are other rules in multiplying polynomials that will help you perform the multiplication
process.

A. To multiply a binomial by another binomial, simply distribute the first term of

the first binomial to each term of the other binomial then distribute the second
term of the first binomial to each term of the other binomial and simplify the
results by combining similar terms. This procedure is also known as the F-O-I-L
method or Smile method. Another way is the vertical way of multiplying which is
the conventional one.

Example: (𝑥𝑥 + 2)(𝑥𝑥 + 7)

 DISTRIBUTIVE Method
(𝑥𝑥 + 2)(𝑥𝑥 + 7) = 𝑥𝑥(𝑥𝑥 + 7) + 2(𝑥𝑥 + 7)
= 𝑥𝑥 2 + 7𝑥𝑥 + 2𝑥𝑥 + 14
= 𝑥𝑥 2 + 9𝑥𝑥 + 14

 FOIL Method
First Terms Last Terms F → (𝑥𝑥)(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑥𝑥 2
O → (𝑥𝑥)(7) = 7𝑥𝑥
(𝑥𝑥 + 2)(𝑥𝑥 + 7)
I → (2)(𝑥𝑥) = 2𝑥𝑥
Outer Terms Inner Terms L → (2)(7) = 14

Since 7𝑥𝑥 and 2𝑥𝑥 are similar terms we can combine them. 7𝑥𝑥 + 2𝑥𝑥 = 9𝑥𝑥. Thus, the
answer is 𝑥𝑥 2 + 9𝑥𝑥 + 14.

 VERTICAL Method
𝑥𝑥 + 2
𝑥𝑥 + 7
7𝑥𝑥 + 14
𝑥𝑥 2 + 2𝑥𝑥
𝑥𝑥 2 + 9𝑥𝑥 + 14

B. To multiply a polynomial with more than one term by a polynomial with three
or more terms, simply distribute the first term of the first polynomial to each term

6
Practice proper hygiene protocol at all times
of the other polynomial. Repeat the procedure for the remaining terms up to the
last term and simplify the results by combining similar terms.
Examples:
1) ( 𝑥𝑥 + 2)(𝑥𝑥 2 + 3𝑥𝑥 − 2) = 𝑥𝑥(𝑥𝑥 2 + 3𝑥𝑥 − 2) + 2(𝑥𝑥 2 + 3𝑥𝑥 − 2)
= 𝑥𝑥 3 + 3𝑥𝑥 2 − 2𝑥𝑥 + 2𝑥𝑥 2 + 6𝑥𝑥 − 4
= 𝑥𝑥 3 + (3𝑥𝑥 2 + 2𝑥𝑥 2 ) +(- 2𝑥𝑥 + 6𝑥𝑥) − 4
= 𝑥𝑥 3 + 5𝑥𝑥 2 + 4𝑥𝑥 − 4
2) (𝑥𝑥 2 + 3𝑥𝑥 – 4)(4𝑥𝑥 3 + 5𝑥𝑥 – 1)
= 𝑥𝑥 2 (4𝑥𝑥 3 + 5𝑥𝑥 – 1) + 3𝑥𝑥(4𝑥𝑥 3 + 5𝑥𝑥 – 1) − 4(4𝑥𝑥 3 + 5𝑥𝑥 – 1)
= 4𝑥𝑥 5 + 5𝑥𝑥 3 − 𝑥𝑥 2 + 12𝑥𝑥 4 + 15𝑥𝑥 2 − 3𝑥𝑥 − 16𝑥𝑥 3 − 20𝑥𝑥 + 4
= 4𝑥𝑥 5 + 12𝑥𝑥 4 + (5𝑥𝑥 3 − 16𝑥𝑥 3 ) + (-𝑥𝑥 2 + 15𝑥𝑥 2 ) +(-3𝑥𝑥 − 20𝑥𝑥) + 4
= 4𝑥𝑥5 + 12𝑥𝑥4 − 11𝑥𝑥3 + 14𝑥𝑥2 − 23𝑥𝑥 + 4

Dividing Polynomial by a Monomial

I. Learning Competency with Code

Multiplies and Divides Polynomial (M7AL-IIe-2)

Division is the reverse operation of multiplication. In multiplying polynomials,
the exponents are added while in dividing polynomials, the exponents are subtracted.
Let us study the following rules in dividing polynomials.

To divide a polynomial by a monomial, simply divide each term of the

polynomial by the given divisor.

Examples:
1. Divide 12𝑥𝑥 4 – 16𝑥𝑥 3 + 8𝑥𝑥 2 by 4𝑥𝑥 2
4 3 2 3x2 – 4x + 2

Dividing Polynomial by Polynomial with More Than One Term

I. Learning Competency with Code

Multiplies and Divides Polynomial (M7AL-IIe-2)

II. Background Information for Learners

Another division of polynomials is on polynomial by a polynomial with
more than one term (by long division). To perform this, simply follow the procedure
in dividing numbers by long division.

These are some suggested steps to follow:

1) Check the dividend and the divisor if they are in standard form.
2) Set-up the long division by writing the division symbol where the divisor is
outside the division symbol and the dividend inside it.
3) You may now start the Division, Multiplication, Subtraction and Bring
Down cycle.
4) You can stop the cycle when:
a) the quotient (answer) has reached the constant term.
b) the exponent of the divisor is greater than the exponent of the dividend.
Examples:
1. Divide 2485 by 12.
1

2. Divide x2 – 3x – 10 by x+2. 1) divide the first term of the dividend by
x–5 the first term of the divisor and put the
result on top x2 ÷ x = x
x + 2 x 2 − 3x − 10 2) multiply that result by the divisor
– (-x2 + 2x) x(x+2) = x2 + 2x
- 5x – 10 3) subtract the product from the dividend
– (- 5x – 10) (x2 – 3x) – (x2 +2x) = 5x
0 4) bring down the remaining term/s
-5x – 10
5) repeat the procedure 1
-5x ÷ x = -5
6) multiply the partial quotient by the
divisor
-5(x + 2) = -5x – 10
7) repeat the procedure 3
(-5x – 10) – (-5x – 10) = 0
