Evaluating Algebraic
1 Expressions
When you are buying things, you look for the value of the items you
need then estimate the amount that is within your budget. You need the
knowledge of evaluating algebraic expressions in order for you to arrive in
correct decision.

Evaluating Algebraic Expression
Examples:
Steps to follow in evaluating
1. Evaluate 3x - 5 when x = 3. algebraic expressions:
Solution: 3x - 5 1. Substitute the given values
for each variable.
= 3(3) - 5
2. Simplify first the expression
=9-5 within the parentheses.
=4 3. Simplify the expressions with
exponents.
2. Evaluate x - y when x = -2 and y = -6
4. Perform all indicated
Solution: x - y operations and simplify the
result.
= ( - 2) - ( - 6)
= -2 + 6

Additional Activities
Direction: Evaluate the following expressions. Choose the letter of the correct
answer and write your answer on a separate sheet/s of paper.
Lesson
Addition and Subtraction
2 of Polynomials
Like arithmetic, polynomials can be combined through the processes of
addition and subtraction. Just follow the rules in adding and subtracting
polynomials and you will arrive at the correct solution.

What’s In
Let us recall the previous lesson about evaluating algebraic
expressions. To evaluate an algebraic expression, determine its numerical
value by substituting a given set of numbers in place of letters or variables.
1. x + 2y – z
3. 𝑥 2 –4y + 𝑧 2
4. 10x – 2y +z
𝑥 2+2𝑧

What’s New
Adding Polynomials
Consider the terms 2b and 8b. Since the terms are similar, they can
be combined as 10b.
7
To add polynomials, simply combine similar terms and proceed as in
addition of monomials. Take note that only similar terms can be
combined.
Subtracting Polynomials
To subtract polynomials having similar terms, the numerical coefficients are
subtracted as in signed numbers, and the literal coefficient is retained.
What is It
Examples:
8
3. Perform (a2 − 2a + 2) + (4a2 − 18)
Arrange the polynomials vertically. Place
Solution: each term aligned to their similar literal
a2 − 2a + 2 coefficient. If the terms are not similar, then
+ 4a2 − 18 they cannot be combined.
𝟐 Copy the terms that do not have the same
𝟓𝐚 − 𝟐𝐚 − 𝟏𝟔
literal coefficients, then arrange according to its
degree.
6. Find the difference between (y3 + 5y2 + 20) and (y3 − 12y2 + y + 4).
Solution:
(y 3 + 5y 2 + 20) – ( y 3 − 12y 2 + y + 4)
+ (−y 3 + 12y 2 − y − 4)
(y 3 + 5y2 + 20) (–)
