IV. Procedure

Teachers Activity Students Activity

A. Preliminary Activity

Good morning, class! Good morning, ma’am.

Before we start, let’s bow our heads and

let us pray. In the name of the father, the As it was, the beginning is now and ever
Son, and Holy Spirit. shall be a world without end.
Amen. Amen.

How are you today? Good po ma’am.

Fine po ma’am.

That’s good to hear.

Now, let’s check the attendance, say

present if your name is called. Present po ma’am……

Very good class.

Before we get down to our topic, let us

first be reminded of our classroom
rooms.

Stay focused.
Think before you speak and raise your
hand if you want to answer or for
inquiries.
Always listen to the teachers or when
other students are talking.
Respect one another.
Try your best.

Yes, we are.

Okay, are you ready to know and learn

our topic for today?

B. Motivation
*Valuing

Before we properly start our lesson for (silence)

today, let us first have an activity. I will
group you into four groups. The colors
of your name tags correspond to what
group you belong. Do not go yet to your
groupmates for I will first give you the
instructions on what to do. Okay class?

We will play a game called” Puzzle

Translate “.
Yes ma’am.
The mechanics of this game are very
simple. You just have to assemble the
puzzle and translate the signs/pictures
shown. If you are done and wish to
answer just shout “DARNA”. Remember
(students raising their head )
that this is a race.

Do you have any questions?

Clarifications? If none, you may now go
to your respective groups and form a
circle.

Is everyone settled?

Are you ready?

(teacher give each an envelope)

Do not open it yet. Wait for my cue.

You may now open it.

Picture 1

(Announce the winner)

It raises awareness po ma’am.

What do you think is the importance of
knowing the signs and symbols in Knowing the signs and symbols in
weather advisories? weather advisories is a safety
communication wherein people will
become aware of the possible forecast of
weather.

Very good class! Let's do a Hooray clap!

C. Presentation

Symbols and signs play an important role

especially in raising awareness or
cautions just like in the weather icons
used in our activity. Indeed, symbols and
signs are often used in real life to express
a message.

But how about in mathematics? How can

mathematical signs and symbols be used
in conveying messages or more
specifically English phrases? This will be
answered to our lesson about Translating
English Phrases into Algebraic
Expressions and Vice Versa
D. Discussion
What is an algebraic expression?

Anyone in the class?

We already discussed this in our previous

lesson.

Yes Mr./Ms.______

Excellent!

An algebraic expression is a
mathematical phrase that uses
coefficients, unknown variables, algebraic
operations, and constants.

In mathematics, what do these symbols

mean?

+ x Addition

Subtraction

Multiplication

-

Division

Fantastic!

These symbols are the 4 mathematical

operations. Addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division.

Now let us translate English phrases to

algebraic expressions or mathematical
expressions.
In Translating English phrases into
algebraic expressions, it is important to
know the words that are going to be used
to indicate mathematical operations.
These are some of the words that you
have to be familiar with.

Addition (+)
-Plus
-More than
-Increased by
-the sum of
-the total of
-added to

Subtraction (-)
-Minus
-Less than
-Decreased by
-The difference of
-Subtracted from

Multiplication (x)
-Times
-Multiplied by
-The product of

Division (÷)
-Divided by
-The ratio of
-The quotient

Now, we are going to translate English

phrases to algebraic expression

3x+14

Explanation: The numerical value of 3

represents a coefficient, which is a
number used in unison with a variable.

In this expression, x is a variable, which is

a letter that represents an unknown
quantity.

The addition sign in this expression is an

algebraic operation. Used
interchangeably with the phrase
“arithmetic operations,” algebraic
operations can also be represented by
multiplication, division, or subtraction
symbols. They can also include a square
root or exponent in combination with one
of these symbols.

The quantity of 14 represents a constant,

which is a number that has a clearly
defined value.

Example

1. The sum of x and y.

Explanation: We have to first identify

what mathematical operation is used in
the sentence. When we say sum what Add po ma’am.
operation does it pertain to?

Yes, addition.
Plus, sign po.
What is the sign of addition?

Very good.

It is written as x+y

2. The difference of a number and 10

Explanation: When we say difference the

operation will be subtraction and we are
going to use the minus sign. Right class?

But what does a number term mean?

When we say a number, it pertains to a

variable. A variable is any letter in the
alphabet but let’s stick with using x as our
first variable. Do not be confused with the
term class, okay? When you read the
term a number automatically it means that
a variable is present.

Now we have x-10.

3. The product of twice a number and

four

How are we going to solve this? Multiplication po ma’am.

What operation to use?

That is correct.

Explanation: The operation to be used in

this example is multiplication. When we
say twice a number, twice means two
right? And a number pertains to a
variable. Thus, twice a number is written
to 2x.

Now we have 2x ✖ 4 or 2x(4).

Now, I want you to answer these

questions individually. I want you to
answer this and write it in the green
board. I will assign what item you are
going to answer.

(Assigned the students)

1. Total number of 7 and 9

2. 5 decreased by 2
3. Twice a number of times 5
4. Ratio of 3 and 9

You may start answering.

(Teacher will listen and checked it)

Okay, let's now translate algebraic

expressions to English phrases.
Translating algebraic expressions into
English phrases will become easier since
you are able to translate English phrases
to algebraic expressions. You already
have an idea on how to translate it but
there are signs and symbols that you
have to be familiar with first. Here are the
list of some of the signs and symbols;

Addition (+)
Subtraction (-)
Multiplication (x)
Division (÷)
Less than (<)
Greater than (>)
Equal to (=)
Not equal to (≠)

Example

1. 2x-1

How would you write 2x-1 into English

phrases?

Any ideas?

Explanation: Again, the first thing to do is

to identify what mathematical operation
was used. It is evident that the expression
used subtraction. 2x is written as twice a
number.

Thus, we can translate 2x-1 as the

difference of twice a number and 1 or we
can also write this as twice a number
decreased by 1. It is up to how you are None so far ma’am.
going to construct the sentence as long
as it is correctly written.

Any questions? Clarifications?

Okay let's have another example. Identify first what algebraic Operations is
used po ma’am.
2. 3x>15
How can we translate this to an English
phrase?

Incredible!

We can translate this to, thrice a number

is greater than 15.

3. Alfred carries a load of 12

kilograms. He finds it heavy, so he
removes a weight of 4 kilograms. The answer is 12-4 po.
Translate to algebraic expressions.

Who wants to answer this?

Great Job!

Explanation: It is written as 12-4.

Always remember that translating English

verbal statements to algebraic
expressions and vice versa, a single word
can make a difference. It is very important
to interpret every word in the statement
correctly to avoid misinterpretation. Just
like how you interact with other people. It
is salient that choice of words or phrases
must be selected properly especially in
conveying an emotion or feeling towards
other people.

It is about Translating English Phrases

into Algebraic Expressions and Vice
E. Generalization Versa

Now class, what is our topic again?

The algebraic or mathematical operation
used po ma’am. The coefficients,
unknown variables, and constants.
What are the things that you must
consider in translating English phrases to
algebraic or mathematical expressions Sign and symbol are important because
and vice versa? they convey the message without saying
a word, they convey same information
How important are the symbols/signs in more precisely and in brief. Also, one
translating? single mistake will affect the meaning of
the phrase.

Excellent!

F. Application

Since you already understand our lesson

let us have a group activity. This activity is
like Quiz Bowl. All you have to do is to
write your answers on the cardboard and
wait for my cue. When I say raise your
answers, raise your cardboard
immediately. Yes ma’am.

Do you get it class?

Is there any questions and clarifications?

If none, let get started.
