Subject- Request to Revoke Luggage Shifting Decision
Respected Sir, This is with reference to the decision taken by Hostel Offices and Hostel Warden to shift the luggage of the students left behind in hostel rooms into cloakrooms even after the continuous resentment from students. Amid the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic, the inter-state travel guidelines are very restrictive in nature and we don’t know how long the lockdown will last. In addition, the decision put the outstation students on a tightrope because of the increasing alarming state of the pandemic in the country. They have left their important documents such as DMCs, copies of thesis work and laptops in the hostel. The decision to put the luggage into cloakrooms increases the chances that these documents may get misplaced. If this happens, who will be responsible? Many students belong to faraway states which put undue pressure on them as many of them cannot afford the cost of travel and are afraid of travelling by train. Sir, we need to understand the gravity of the situation as the decision might be taken without considering the difficult situation of the hostellers. Student’s Council addressed the concerns of the students and come up with an alternative approach that can be undertaken in this situation. We have contacted with courier services present in Kozhikode who will help us to transit the unpacked luggage of the students left behind in their respective rooms to their home city. The courier service will charge nominal amount on the basis of kgs of each student’s luggage and it will be borne by the students who left their luggage and for those who can’t afford the cost, we have also started fund raising campaign to bear these expenses. Therefore, Student Council is requesting you to look into the concerns of the students and allow us to implement our initiatives so that every student get their luggage at the earliest. Regards, Students’ Council IIM Kozhikode 2. Subject- Request for Fees Reduction Amid Covid-19 Pandemic Respected Sir, As we all know that Covid-19 has completely disrupted our environment and this crisis has led to a complete upheaval in the higher education world, with both classes and assessment shifting online for the remainder of the academic year in most cases. Given the impact of the coronavirus and especially quarantine measures, many students family income has gone down drastically and their finance has been severely disrupted. Many of the students have taken huge education loans while others are spending their savings from their previous job. Since the Institute is conducting online classes for the remainder of the semester and the cost of the college has been rapidly rising, students feel that they are at the raw end of the deal. They are getting concerned, impatient and a bit apprehensive. Student Council members have been trying to address many of the students queries but an official statement from the administration at this point can turn the table. We are in particular concerned about paying the current term fees. Since the beginning of the academic year, we are not utilizing any mess and hostel facilities and at the same time, we are not getting full facilities of IT, Infrastructure & Services and Library that they get while on campus. In consideration of this pandemic induced situation, it is with regret that we are seeking the institute for assistance in current term fees. In particular, we hereby request you to provide relief in total of course fees by 10% reduction in terms of tuition fees and other charges for various facilities that would not be availed by the students. For this, all the students of IIM-K will be grateful to you. Regards, Students’ Council IIM Kozhikode 3. Subject- PGP23 Farewell Ceremony 2021 Dear Batch 2020-22, We are little emotional while writing this, knowing how soon PGP23 will say goodbye to the college, teachers, juniors, canteen etc. A farewell is one of the important events of a student’s life as it symbolizes the closure of one’s educational journey from a college, school or workplace. It is one of the best ways to convey a warm goodbye to your friends, classmates, juniors and most importantly your teachers. Thus, it is the time to build memories that the students will cherish for their entire life. In order to remember their golden memories and to greet best wishes to all final year students of PGP23, Student Council is going to organize a farewell ceremony on 24 th March, 2021. Farewell ceremony will not be completed without the active participation of juniors to show their love, respect and gratitude. They make you treasure the countless memories of college life. As loss sinks in slowly and we realise that we might never meet some of these people again, we tend to be kinder, more cheerful and less angry versions of ourselves. In this regard, Student council wants active participation of students in farewell ceremony. For that, every student is required to participate in at least 2 events which will be intimated very soon. Please reach out in case of any queries. Thank You Regards, Students’ Council IIM Kozhikode 5. Subject- Welcome to Students’ Council | Student’s Affair’s Chairperson Respected Sir, The member of Student’s Council extends a warm welcome to you as the new chairperson of Student’s Affairs. You have always impressed us with your clear vision and ability to get the job done against the most formidable opposition. We have heard many glowing reports of your work in the institute. Congratulations on your appointment. Students’ Council are the apex student body at IIM Kozhikode with 7 senior members and 10 junior members. We co-ordinate and manage all academic, extra- curricular and day-to-day activities of student life. While time may not always be a luxury at business school, learning to make the most of it and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to develop themselves is the main purpose of the Students’ Council. We are confident that your influence will continue to encourage our proud tradition of involvement in promoting student’s interest. Please be aware that you have our full support. We wish you all the best as you represent us. Regards, Students’ Council IIM Kozhikode 6. Subject- Request to Revoke Decision Regarding Sangram Respected Sir, This is with reference to the decision taken by PGP Chairperson to scrap Sangram from the academic calendar. Sir, Student’s Council wants to bring the benefits of inter-college sports competition to the table. During the academic year, Sangram provides more competitive options to students to showcase their skills in sports. We have a great number of both male and female students who take active part in the athletics competition at college level. Sangram will help them to learn the benefit of representing their community. It is a false notion that taking part in sports can reduce the ability of students to get good grades. Studies and researches show that students who take part in sports perform way better in their core course. In addition, it helps them to develop more persistence in their personal lives and such students are found to possess better patience and tolerance. During sports activity, every team member is acting like a cohesive unit towards a common goal. It will help them to learn how teamwork helps to win the game and to become leaders in real life. Sangram helps the students to develop lifelong commitments to their fellow students and the institute. And all that Komrades pay off in the long-term to the institute when alumni gather and donate to the institute. Last but not the least, we all know that IIM Kozhikode has an eminent position in sports community among the 4 south Indian IIMs and emerged victorious in last year Sangram, so if institute is not going to take participant in Sangram, it will create negative impact on the image of the institute not only across IIMs but also globally. So, on behalf of the sports committee, we are requesting to look into the matter seriously and revoke the decision. Regards, Students’ Council IIM Kozhikode 7. Subject- IIM Kozhikode Silver Jubilee | Action Plan Respected Sir, IIM Kozhikode has a huge stake in the quality and type of students we attract, as the composition of student’s body is critical to the development and success. In order to maintain our decorum, we are required to bring changes in time which requires a concentrated effort to follow an ever-evolving vision and strategy. In light of upcoming Silver Jubilee, Student Council has come up with a plan of action to strengthen the brand image of the institute. We will focus on three aspect; Develop, Attachment and Grow. By Develop, we refer to support and develop such a work environment where the faculty, staff and students must feel a sense of autonomy and connectivity over what they are doing. They must feel that they have the capabilities to do their best and can explore their limits. It will encourage the sentiment of stretch and teamwork. By Attachment, we refer to strength our connections with global thought leaders, practice and policy, our alumni and local community. We should write papers for a global audience, build research initiatives, take part in international conferences and develop case studies that place us in the flow of leading-edge conversations. We should carry out research in different field by engaging people in businesses and government, bring it back to class and test our insights and thought with them to reenergise that engagement. We should expand our alumni connection who are in positions of responsibility in various walks of life all over the world and have rich life experiences. We should engage them with our insights, ambitions and our goals to feel life-long members of IIM Kozhikode community. Apart from it, we can test our theories locally, contribute to our neighbours, and in the process learn from them and be treated as valued members of the community. By Grow, we refer to IIM-K’s value proposition which represents a combination of tangible and intangible elements. IIM-K started with 42 students in its first PGP batch and now it has more than 572 students. In addition to, IIM-K has high-quality faculty which are critical for a high-impact educational institution. We should focus to scour for the best possible faculty, retain the best faculty and to offer faculty world class employment opportunities so that institutional competitiveness should be maintained. I hope that you will like our plan of action and provide feedback so that we can take initiatives in respect to plan at the earliest. Regards, Students’ Council IIM Kozhikode 9. Subject- Request to Revoke Decision Regarding Student Events Respected Sir, This is with reference to the decision taken by PGP to cluster all the student events in a single week. Sir, we all know that last year student events had been successfully completed with 100% of student participation across all the events. All the events went smoothly without any conflict or any type of disruption. Student enjoyed the events and the organizers received great appreciation from the participants. Happening of Student Events throughout the academic year provides a great variety of options to the students to participate and to organize multiple events according to their interest. Participating in any event requires evaluation of the objective of the event and the learning that they will get. In addition to, organizers also need to take into consideration various factor while organizing any event so that the objective should be achieved. Clustering of the events in a single week will lead to create a lot of problems to students as a participant and as an organizer. It will be hectic, messy and hazy. Students will get impatient and apprehensive. They will not be able to focus on their academic activities as they have to miss their classes and will not able to submit the assignment before the deadlines which will have direct negative impact on their GPA. It also leads to decrease the percentage of student participation as an event may have full participants and an another can have zero. It will create conflict of interest between different organizers. On behalf of the student of IIM Kozhikode, Student Council is requesting you to please look into the matter carefully and revoke the decision. For this, all the students of IIM Kozhikode will be grateful to you. Regards, Students’ Council IIM Kozhikode 10. Subject- Cancellation of Protest Against CAA/NRC Dear All, Student Council is writing this letter against the idea of the students to hold protest against CAA/NRC. We all know that ever since the passage of CAA and NCR is established, one is witnessing protests across India. This protest highlights an issue that is already known and is largely passive aggressive in nature, which may not be the intension of an individual supporter or the community, but is always the ultimate outcome. Protest exists to amalgamate by inducing counter argument and counter protest, often result to tension, violation and polarisation. The reason is no matter how peaceful a protest intends to be, by the very nature of words, a protest is a negative. The fundamental building block of a protest is adversarial towards the institute it aims to alter so serves no true purpose other than to disrupt the status quo and essentially badger authorities into action. This is almost identical to terrorist tactics and is therefore responded to in kind - zero negotiation. Although the idea to protest is non-violent but it takes no time to use abusive words and occurrence of violence incidents. The possibility of this unethical behavioural of students in institute premise will not be entertained at any level. This will lead to create negative impact of our institute’s image across India as well as global. Event occurred in Jamia set an example. The incident created war-like situation and many students were filed FIR which not only impact their personal life, but also their professional life. Doing anything against the contentious law while protesting will lead to the detainment of the students from further academic terms. The administration and Student Council believe that the best-case result of a protest is those that it seeks to change remain unaware of it. As awareness only results in resistance to equal or greater effect. So at best, nothing happens. At worst, lives are lost. Protest can validate the existing beliefs of collaborators which is of limited benefit, and they can convert well-wishing fence sitters, but this is a minor victory compared to the disadvantages. Therefore, we have decided to revoke the idea of protest after taking into consideration the interest of all the stakeholders. Please contact us in case of any queries.
