days. Teen pregnancies make it very difficult for young mothers to pursue their dreams
and meet the demands of an infant. Fortunately, most teen pregnancies can be easily
prevented by using birth control; however, even birth control is not 100% effective. The
most effective way to prevent teen pregnancies is abstinence, which is 100% effective.

1. The most embarrassing moment of my sophomore year was how I earned my nickname,
Crash. It all started right after school when I turned onto the busiest street by the school. First, I
pulled up right behind this truck at a stop sign. After a second, a fellow older student told me that
I was close and that I was going to hit the truck in front of me. At the moment, I was trying to
tell the kid that I was giving a ride to get back to the car because he was hanging out of the
windows. Since I was distracted, I thought the long line of traffic had started to move, but it
hadn’t. In the blink of an eye, I hit the back of the truck in front of me. The devastation sunk. I
was so worried that I damaged the truck, but all that I did was scratch his bumper. Lucky for
him! Then, it came time to look at my car. My car was ruined. The hood was buckled up, the
front end was pushed back, and my headlights were broken. Humiliated and scared, I still have to
drive my totaled car home. During school that year, I never did hear the end of what had
happened that day.

2. When I was seven years old, it was my job each evening to round up the chickens and make
sure they were locked safely in their pen. I hit upon the idea of sitting on the roof of our house
and guiding the chickens into their shed using a small hand mirror. What you did was you
targeted the “lead” chook (often the rooster), then flashed the fading sun’s light into one eye or
the other. Since a chicken always veers away from a light shone into its eyes, you could
effectively steer then whenever you liked. It took ten minutes longer than simply shooing them
in. My dad caught me doing it once, and rather than yell me down off the roof like I certainly
would with my own kids, he just laughed and told me to be careful.

3. The viola is a stringed instrument in the violin family. It is only slightly larger than the violin
and is tuned at a lower pitch. Like its smaller relative, the viola is held on the shoulder under the
chin and its played with bow. While the violin has many uses, the viola is used mainly in
orchestral and chamber music.

4. The dirt of the girls’ cotton dresses continued on their legs, feet, arms, and faces to make
them all of a piece. Their greasy uncolored hair hung down, uncombed, with a grim finality. I
knelt to see them better, to remember them for all time. The tears that had slipped down my dress
left unsurprising dark spots, and made the front yard blurry and even more unreal. The world had
taken a deep breath and was having doubts about continuing to revolve.

5. Around 2 a.m. something woke Charles Hanson up. He lay in the dark listening. Sometimes
felt wrong. Outside, crickets sang, tree-frogs chirruped. Across the distant forest floated two
muffled hoots from a barred owl. It was too quiet. At home in New Jersey, the nights are filled
with the busy, comforting sounds of traffic. You always have the comforting knowledge that
other people are all around you. And light: At home he can read in bed by the glow of the
streetlight. It was too quiet and much too dark. Even starlight failed to penetrate the 80-foot
canopy of trees the camper was parked beneath. It was the darkest dark he had ever seen. He felt
for the flashlight beside his bunk. It was gone. He found where his pants were hanging and, as he
felt the pockets for a box of matches, something rustled in the leaves right outside the window,
inches from his face. He heard his wife, Wanda, hold her breath; she was awake, too. Then
whatever, was outside in the darkness also breathed, and the huge silence of the night seemed to
come inside the camper, stifling them. It was then he decided to pack up and move to a motel.
