BUCOM ST700IR
version 1.2

A – GENERAL

The ST700IR is a gas detection sensing head designed for the detection of
flammable and combustible gasses (most hydro carbon gasses) BUCOM
version) and carbon dioxide (BUVOX version). The ST700IR sensing head is
ideal for integration within a stationary gas detection system such as the
BUCARD BC4, BUCONTROL 4 or BUMODULE systems.

The sensing head is equipped with a special, replaceable infrared sensor. The
detector is a fully digital and extreme accurate measurement device. The
output signal of the ST700IR is a standardised 4-20mA signal which will be
accepted by most gas detection control systems. The power supply of the
ST700IR sensing head is supplied by a three-core screened connection cable.

The ST700IR features all necessary calibration functions inside the detector.
The detector can therefore be calibrated by one person only. This on-man-
calibration feature offers the highest degree of accuracy and disposes the
need for a second calibration procedure on the gas detection control unit.

B1 – Installation and Mounting
The ST700IR sensing head should be installed according to the relevant
regulations, laws and practices of the country concerned.

The following general rules should be taken into account during the
installation of the sensing head:

1. The sensing head should be installed in an area free from shocks or

vibrations.
2. The unit should be accessible for maintenance and/or calibration
purposes at all time.
3. The detector cell should be pointed downwards to avoid accumulation
of moisture, dirt, dust and/or (chemical) residue.
4. The prevailing air currents around the sensing head should posses the
maximum amount of gas, to attain a maximum effect.

Consider possible gas dispersion patterns, in which the weight of the gas in
respect to air should be taken into account. Other factors could also influence
the dispersion of the gas.

All possible gas leakage points, like flanges, joints, pumps, etc. should be
identified as such and continuously monitored.

Compare actual environmental specifications and regulations with the

technical specifications of the used detector and sensing head.

BUVECO offers several accessories to minimise the effect of rain, wind and
particulate matter. The accessories include:
• weather cap
• gas collecting cone

The ST700IR is in a great extent immune to electromagnetic interference. The

ST700IR should nevertheless be installed with a certain amount of distance
from radio transmission equipment or similar devices.

During installation the ST700IR should be isolated from local ground. The unit
should only be connected to ground through the screening of the connection
cable (see chapter B2 – Cable Requirements & Cable Installation).

BUCOM ST700IR
version 1.2
6
B2 – Cable Requirements & Cable Installation
The connection cable of the ST700IR should be a three-core stranded and
screened cable. The installation cable should be equipped with a suitable
insulating outer jacket complying to industrial standards and capable to
withstand both weather and industrial influences.

The connection terminals inside the ST700IR are able to accept cables using
a core diameter of 0.75 to 1.0mm2.

The connection cable should be connected to the output terminal PL2 and
PL3 according to the following terminal designation:

Connector Connections
PL2 + VCC
PL3 + SIGNAL
PL2 – COM

The cable screen should be connected to the cable gland of the ST700IR
sensing head. The screen should only be connected to ground at the input of
the gas detection control unit. A complete schematic view of the installation
requirements is given in the Connection Diagram of the ST700IR (see
APPENDIX – Connections on page 18).

Avoid running connection cables close to high power cables, radio

transmission lines, computer communication cables or cables carrying pulses
of high current.

A screened multicore cable and marshalling box may be employed if more

sensing heads are used within one gas detection system. Every sensing head
should be connected to the marshalling box using a separate three core
screened cable. The individual cable screen and screening of the multicore
should be connected to an isolated bus bar inside the marshalling box.

B3 – Power Supply
The power supply requirements for the ST700IR sensing head are stated in
the Technical Specifications as described in the technical data (see chapter G
– TECHNICAL DATA – page 16).

To maintain optimal use and reliability under heavy duty industrial

circumstances, the following requirements should be taken into account:

• The power supply of the gas detection control module should be a valid
CE approved design with a maximum amount of protection against
overload and power failure.
• In heavy duty industrial applications the use of good power supply
filtering, a power back up system (UPS) and/or an emergency power
supply is recommended.

B4 – EMI/RFI Protection
The sensing head and connection cable should be protected against external
noise sources. Avoid running connection cables close to interfering sources
such as high power cables, radio transmission lines, computer communication
connections or cables carrying pulses of high current.

It may be considered to use a different installation method if the normal

installation method does not offer optimal performance. The following
installation method offers a higher degree of protection against the mentioned
interferences, but is also much more complex.

The ST700IR must be mounted on isolators in a way there is no contact with

the local electrical ground. The screen of the connection cable should be
connected to the detector head by folding the screen of the cable back onto
the jacket of the cable. Be sure that there is a good contact between the cable
screen and the cable gland.

The other side of the screened cable should be connected to the earth of the
gas detection control unit as described in chapter B2 – Cable Requirements &
Cable Installation.

The earth connection of the measurement control module should be a

"clean" earth, under all circumstances.

C – CALIBRATION

The ST700IR sensing head should be checked and calibrated regularly. The
calibration frequency of the detector is directly related to the measurement
range and the usage and measurement environment. BUVECO will offer a
calibration advise at each delivery.

The ST700IR sensing head is a fully microprocessor controlled measurement

system. All necessary control elements are available on the circuit board. For
the calibration of the sensing head, the following materials and instruments
are needed:

1. Ampere meter with measurement range for 4…20mADC use.

2. Certified calibration gas.

C1 – Password
The settings of the ST700IR sensing head can only be changed after entering
an unique password. The sensing head features two menu pages for setting
the sensor zero level and measurement range.

The USER password should be entered as follows:

The standard USER password is: 122.

The selection keys have the following functions:

Key Function 1 Function 2

To calibrate the sensor, proceed as follows:

SENSOR ZERO LEVEL

The zero level of the detector should be calibrated as follows:

• Select the E1 – Sensor Zero menu

• Push ENTER (SW3) to activate the menu.
• The display shows the current zero level

• The detector should be in a clean area where no gas is present.

• Press ENTER (SW3) and the zero level of the sensor will be calibrated
automatically according to the current gas concentration (The display
