Underground to Canada- Barbara Smucker

I chose this book to tie into my Social Studies Curriculum on Immigration. I wanted to have examples of
literature where students could empathize with the characters in the book.

Vocabulary Words

These words represent major themes from the book. The characters from the book are oppressed by
their owners, flee north to Canada, encounter good and bad people, all in the pursuit of freedom. This
book also gives opportunities to learn about empathy and the human condition. I can build on ELL and
student knowledge of the book by designing activities and discussions suited to enhancing their
understanding.

I start with a mini lesson to give students knowledge about the period that they are studying. Having
context about the period being studied gives an understanding of what it was like, how people treated
people and how people lived.

1. Students can practice separating the word by syllable, saying the word out and clapping it out.
2. The teacher can define the word out loud.
3. Have students come up with examples of the term in their own words (Melody- Song).
Unfamiliar words like Underground Railway might be mis-interpreted – during that time, it is
impossible to have railway underground. Terms like that need to be explained by the teacher.

I would launch into a discussion about the words and how the words make them feel. Teaching the skills
of empathy is a perfect way to talk about injustice and why people want to enslave each other. In a class
or ELL’s displaced by war and violence this might not be the right book for them.

Questions to ask:
1. How are some people oppressed?
2. Do people deserve to have a master?
3. What does the word freedom mean to you?
4. How do you show strength in situations that bother or hurt you?
Follow Up Activity

Students can make a slideshow one per word.


1. They will define the word
2. Find a picture for it
3. Put it into a sentence.

Students can share their presentation with the class.
