AC vs.

DC (Alternating Current
vs. Direct Current)
Diffen › Science › Physics

Electricity flows in two ways: either in an alternating current (AC) or in a direct

current (DC). Electricity or "current" is nothing but the movement of electrons
through a conductor, like a wire. The difference between AC and DC lies in the
direction in which the electrons flow. In DC, the electrons flow steadily in a single
direction, or "forward." In AC, electrons keep switching directions, sometimes
going "forward" and then going "backward."
Alternating current is the best way to transmit electricity over large distances.

Why is AC better than DC?

Alternating current is a type of current in which the electrons periodically switch directions back
and forth. ... AC could not only be transmitted over long distances easily but could also be
conveniently converted to higher or lower values using transformers.

why DC better than AC?

DC is unquestionably better for long-distance power lines because the losses are less than
AC lines. ... DC transmission lines are special case and are best where loads are nearly
constant (like feeding into a large AC system). AC is best around town where transformers can
adjust the voltage for multiple loads.
