CHAPTER TWO
2. Description of the products
The project is related to production of different types of
painting materials. and manufacturing Paint with following
detail: There are a number of different factor to start paint
production. Due to increase construction of building which
in turn result higher demand of painting material.
2.1 raw material used for production of different types of
painting
Raw materials needed for producing paints As you know there
are various types of paints used in our country. Examples of the
types of paints are emulsion, gloss, textured and ceiling paints.
There are
basic materials used in the production of paints. These are:

The solvent
Most of the sought after paints that are in high demand in Nigeria are either oil based paints or
water based paints. While the oil based paints are shiny and glossy, the water based paints are not

•Pigment: This determines the colour of

the paint.
•Additives
•Resins
You can purchase all these materials and much more at the
market. When you have acquired the required
materials what will be left for you to do mix them properly
taking appropriate note of the right quantity of each of
theingredients. After this you package them and you are ready to
make your
sales. As you can see it is not a difficulttask. Just ensure that you
don’t compromise the quality by using
inferior materials. Paint production chemicals Chemicals are
required in the production of paints and they are used to produce
paints such as Emulsion paints, Texcoat paint, Silk paints,
Screeding paints, P.O.P. paints, Satin paints, Stucco paints,
Road marking paints, Anti-rust paint, Primer undercoat paints,
Aluminum paints, Fire retardant paints, Gloss Oil enamel,
Mosquitoes Insect repellent paints amongst others

· Volatile;
- Ketones , esters, alcohol, aromatics, and aliphatics The
pigment is one of the main and important
constituent of the paint. In general, pigments should be
opaque to ensure good covering power
and chemically inert to secure stability, hence long life.
Pigments should be nontoxic, or at least of very low
toxicity, to both the painter and the inhabitants. Finally,
pigments must be wet by
the film-forming constituents and be of low cost.
Different pigments possess different covering
power perunit weight.

Nonvolatile;
Solvent-based paints: oils and/ or resins plus driers and additives. - Lacquers: celluloses, resins,

plasticizers, and additives.- Water-based paints: styrene-butadiene, polyvinyl acetate, acrylic, other

polymers and emulsions, copolymers plus additives.

3. Other Raw Materials

· Preservatives are also used in the manufacture of water-based paints to prolong their life time.
· Water-alkali solutions and solvents for equipment cleaning and washing, between batches.
Detergents and antiseptics for floor cleaning.

3. Utilities
Packaging materials; different types of packaging materials are used
(aluminum foil, metallic and
plastic containers, tin sheets, and cartons).Steam; is generated in boilers that
use either Mazot (fuel oil), solar (gas oil) or natural gas as fuel. Steam is
used for providing heat requirements and in some large facilities for electric
power generations.

Water; is used as process water, as rinse water for equipment and floor, as boiler feed water, as
cooling water and for domestic purposes. Boiler feed water is pretreated in
softeners to prevent
scale formation. Water may be supplied from public water lines, wells or canals.
The type of
water supply will dictate the type of pretreatment

2.2 CHEMICAL COMPOSTION USED FOR PRODUCTION OF

DIFFERET T TYPES OF PAINTING

 Calcium carbonate (Base matrix)

 Titanium dioxid
 P.V.A
 Formalin
 Nitro sol
 Bama cork
 Ammonia
 Colourite
 Kaolin
 Hydrosol
 Marble dust
 Geni pole
 Texanol
 hydrosol

CALCIUM CARBONATE: This is the base matrix of emulsion and texture paint, meaning that
without calcium carbonate there is no emulsion and texture paint. They are two types of calcium
carbonate, they are Delomite (white) and Cacite (off white), both are very good. The Delomite
(white) is recommended for absolute white or brilliant white, while Cacite (off white) is for dirty
paint or off white paint and for any other color.
Aluminum sil
: This chemical is
popularly known as TITAN, it’s makes your
paint looks shining. it’s mostly used when
producing brilliant white paint. Note; Titan is
still useful when producing other colour but
more significant in brilliant white paint
