LESSON 2 ACTIVITIES
Science Education
NAME: Sharwin B. Bordarais
BLOCK: A

Activity 1 The Aims of the Study and Teaching of Sciences

The aims of teaching and learning science can be summarized below. Recall classroom
activities or learning experiences you had that aimed at developing these outcomes
among the students. Recall also your feelings and insights when you experienced those
activities in class.

Classroom
Aims Activities/Learning Your Feelings and Insights
Experiences
1. Develop inquiring During those times, it’s
minds and curiosity quite hard for me because I
about the world Observing and Investigating don’t know what to do. I’m
really curious about things
that happened however, at
the same time, I gained
ideas.
2. Acquire knowledge, It’s helpful and constructive
conceptual Observing cause and effect, activities that made us to
understanding and Organizing and classifying, think and work through
skills to solve Investigating life cycle abstract ideas and come up
problems and make with multiple solutions to
informed decisions complex issues.
3. Communicate When our teacher group us I was that nervous but also
scientific ideas, into two groups for the kind of excited. It was a nice
arguments and Debate experienced because our
practical experiences minds really works how we
are going to depend our
arguments. The ideas that
we are going to deliver must
be relevant to the topic.
4. Think analytically, This particular activities was
critically and exciting, fun as well as it
creatively to solve Observing, Investigating, gives more knowledge. You
problems, judge and Experimenting will know how or what
arguments and make reaction just happened
decisions while performing this kind
of activity.
5. Appreciate the This activities brought
benefits and Experimenting, Role Playing discoveries and new
limitations of science of supernatural if it’s scientific knowledge and
and its applications relevant to science also it enlightens us that not
all can explain by the
science.
6. Understand the It gives us the
international nature understanding of how
of science and the Debating and Brainstorming social, cultural and material
interdependence of aspects impact the
science, technology formation of new behaviors,
and society new ways of understanding
and new institutions is
crucial in our understanding
of contemporary
postmodern society.
7. Demonstrate This activities are helpful in
attitudes and developing good values
develop values of among us. We are able to
honesty, Exams, planting, and Group demonstrate and do our
responsibility and activities part. With these activities
respect for oneself, we are able to showcase
for others and for also the knowledge that we
the environment have and acquired.

Activity 2 Historical Development of Science Education in the Philippines

The table below, adapted from Pawilen (2005), lists some of the key events in the
development of science education in the Philippines. Read each item carefully then look
for printed and online sources on other legislations and events that contributed
to the improvement of the quality of science education in the Philippines.

Year Highlights
1960s  Printing and distribution of science textbooks by
the United States Operations Mission-National
Economic Council (USOM-NEC) Project and UP
Science Teaching Center

schools
 Development of The Elementary Learning
Continuum (ELC)

(RA) 10533, signing into law the K-12 Program
 Philippine Association for the Advance of Science –
annual conference which it focuses on the training
1950s of science teachers and teaching of science.
 National committee for Science Education set up in
1958 to formulate objectives for teaching of science
education at all levels and to recommend steps that
would upgrade the teaching of science.
 Integration of science with classroom
instruction

Activity 3 The Domains of Scientific Teaching

It was previously stated that teaching is concerned about the teaching of scientific
knowledge and development of science process skills, scientific attitudes and values among
the learners. Give and write the definition and examples of each domain .

Domains of Teaching Definition Examples

Science
is what we learn from the For instance, you might
Scientific Knowledge scientific process, which understand how and why
involves experimenting and the water cycle works, what
collecting data. part of a sound wave
indicates how loud it is (hint:
it’s the height!), how plants
use the energy from
sunlight to make their food
on sunlight, and so on.
are classified as basic skills Include observing qualities,
Science Process Skills and integrated skills. These measuring quantities,
skills can be accessed by sorting/classifying, inferring,
applying them to a series of predicting, experimenting,
lab station activities which and communicating.
are included in the Guide for
Supervisors, Teachers and
Students.
Are a mixture of the Include curiosity, honesty in
Scientific Attitudes and willingness to know and the recording and validation
Values apply a scientific approach of data, flexibility,
to face any task of problem- persistence, open-
solving with respect for mindedness, willingness to
logic and critical thinking tolerate uncertainty, and an
acceptance of the
provisional nature of
scientific explanation.
Activity 4 The Scientific Irony

Public and private institutions alike are making an effort to encourage today’s youth to take
science related courses and careers. Examine the following programs and
innovations below and see how well they have gone in making science careers enticing to
the youth. Write a short description about each program below.

PROGRAM/INNOVATION DESCRIPTION

The program aims to attract Filipino

Balik Scientist Program inventors, S&T professionals, researchers,
and engineers, among others. The host
institution can be the academe,
government, or locally registered
enterprises.
It maintains a disaster management
Project Noah platform that provides data available for
everyone to use. It gives timely storm surge
advisories in affected localities. It has
produced barangay-level hazard maps. It
provides near real-time weather
information. It has created apps and tools
that make disaster preparation easier.
It aims to raise awareness on the
Aghambayan contributions of the scientific community to
the nation and on the value of science and
its role in improving the quality of life of
ordinary Filipinos.
The Microsatellites Diwata 1 and 2 and These are the three satellites that has been
Nanonatellite Maya 1 already sent orbiting into space which
implemented by DOST partnered with
different Institutes.

Philippine Journal of Science single-blind peer-reviewed journal on
natural sciences, engineering, mathematics,
and social sciences. PJS is published by the

Science Schools in the Philippines These are the school sciences that aims to
 Manila Science High School enhance and cultivate the capabilities of
 Philippine Science High School students related to science towards more
 Special Science Elementary Schools innovation.

 Quezon City Regional Science High
School
 Central Visayan Institute Foundation

How would you encourage teens to take science-related courses and careers?

I will show and explain to them the importance of science in our life that having or
developing a skills related to science is irreplaceable. That they will be pioneer of the next
generation. I will share some very inspirational story or experiences of the successful person
who pursue science careers that brought changes in their lives, what challenges they
encountered and surmounted with motivation, effort and passion.
