SECTION - A READING [20 Marks]

1. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:
I will never forget a lesson
son I learnt when I was ten years old. My teacher, Subramaniam lyer,
was telling us how seagulls fly. I had a billion doubts and he offered us as many clarifications.
He took us to the seaside and showed us the birds, explaining every movement, every
action….Wonderstruck,
n….Wonderstruck, I listened to my teacher – the man who , while teaching me about the
flight of birds, gave me purpose in life
life- to fly!
People talk of the lack of role models in Indian society. My only statement to such people is – if
we fail in our family system, we have no right to look for moral leaders anywhere outside.
I will not be presumptuous enough to say that my life can be a model for anybody; but some
poor child living in an obscure place in an underprivileged social setting may find a little
solace
lace in the way my destiny has been shaped. It could perhaps help such children liberate
themselves from the bondage of their illusory backwardness and hopelessness People wonder
how I manage to balance my scientific approach with my spiritual beliefs. I’d say it’s very
simple stars. One star- the Sun –is
is enough to keep our whole solar system running. We are yet
to discover how many more solar systems there are. The thought is overwhelming! It makes
me realize that we are just in the universe. It something , somewhere that I can turn to. And so,
I pray.
I have been given everything I wanted in life
life-and
and much more. I don’t feel the need to pray for
myself. I pray for my nation, for the people of India, for the young minds that will take this
country to the greatest
eatest heights.
1.1 Answer the following questions briefly: (any eight) [1x8=8]
(a) What was the lesion about?
(b) What does the writer have to say about role models?
Pg-1
(c) Which qualities of his teacher does the child like?
(d) How do you know that the boy didn’t belong to a rich family?
(e) How did the science lesion inspire the little boy?
(f) What did the people wonder about?
(g) What has provided solace to the narrator?
(h) Which thought is over-whelming for the narrator?
(i) Why doesn’t the writer feel the need to pray for himself?
2. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
When Sachin Tendulkar came out on to the field at the Eden Gardens for his penultimate Test
to a mighty roar from the crowd, a minor statistic was missed by many. Tendulkar is only the
second player to represent India in Test after turning 40 (he was 40 years and 197 days old
then). The only other player to have achieved this feat was Mulvantrai Himmatlal Mankad
known to the world by his school nickname Vinod Mandad was 41 years and 298 days old
when he played his last Test, beginning 6th February 1959, also against the West Indies, So I
did some research on Mankad’s career.
Vinod Mankad is almost forgotten today, but when he passed away in 1978, Wisden magazine
called him in its obituary “one of the greatest all –rounders that India has ever produced”, and
stated that “for some years he was undoubtedly the best bowler of his type in the world”. He
is also the only Indian cricketer to have a Test named after him-the 1952 Lord’s Test against
England is referred to as Mankad’s Test, even though India lost. His opening partnership of
413 with Pankaj Roy remained a world record for 52 years, and his 231 in that innings stayed
the highest score by an Indian in a Test match for nearly three decades. His 231 had broken his
own previous record of the highest Test score by an Indian: 184. In 1952 , when India beat
England to achieve its first-ever Test victory, it was almost entirely Mankad’s doing , as he
claimed eight for 55 and four for 53 in two innings.
2.1 Answer the following question briefly : (any four) [2x4=8]
(a) Which minor detail was missed by many?
(b) When and against whom did Vinod Mankad play his last test match?
(c) Which test is named after Mankad and why?
(d) When did India achieve its first ever Test victory against whom and what was
Mankad’s achievement?
(e) What did the Wisden Magazine state about Vinod Mankad?
2.2 On the basis of your reading of the passage, fill up the blanks with a word/a phrase:
(any two) [1x2=2]
(a) Mankad was …………..old when he played his last test.
(b) His opening partnership of 413 runs in Lord’s test remained a world record for 52 years
but India …….. .
(c) Mankad claimed ……………. in two innings, in India’s first ever test victory.
Pg-2
2.3 find words in the passage which mean the following words/phrases: (any two). [1x2=2]

(b) minute
(c) notice of death in the newspaper
