    THE ADJECTIVE

    DEGREE OF COMPARISON
     READ THE FOLLOWING SENTENCES
     1. MAYANK IS A TALL MAN.
     2. RAJ IS TALLER THAN MAYANK.
     3. MOHAN IS THE TALLEST OF THE THREE.
     1. POSITIVE DEGREE. For ex, Tall
     2. COMPARATIVE DEGREE. For ex,
    Taller
     3. SUPERLATIVE DEGREE. For ex,
    Tallest
     Positive Degree- The Positive Degree of an Adjective
    shows the existence of a certain quality. It is the original
    form of an Adjective.

     Comparative Degree- The comparative Degree of an


    Adjective shows the higher degree of a quality. It is used
    when two things or persons are compared.

     Superlative Degree-The superlative Degree of an


    Adjective shows the highest degree of a quality. It is used
    when more than two things or persons are compared.
     NOTE
     We use “Than” with the comparative degree
    of adjective. Eg, the white box is heavier than
    the black box.
     We use article “The” with the Superlative
    degree of an Adjective. Eg, He is the oldest
    boy in the class.
    MAKING COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE DEGREES

     1. By adding ‘-er’ and ‘-est’ to the Positive Degree of


    Adjective;
     Positive comparative superlative
     Great greater greatest
     Strong stronger strongest
     2. If an adjective ends in ‘e’, e is dropped before adding
    –er or –est.
     Brave braver bravest
     Safe safer safest
     3.If an adjective ends in ‘y’, y is changed to ‘I’ before
    adding –er and –est
     Easy easier easiest
     Happy happier happiest
     4. In case of some adjectives the last letter is doubled
    before adding –er and –est.
     Big bigger biggest.
     Hot hotter hottest
     5. by adding –er or –est to the positive degree, if it ends
    in ‘y’ preceded by a vowel.
     Grey greyer greyest.
     6. some adjectives are changed by adding ‘more’ and ‘most’
    respectively.
     Active more active most active
     Intelligent more intelligent most intelligent
     7. some adjectives are irregular. Their Comparative and
    Superlative degrees are not formed from the positive
    degrees. These are formed by using new words.
     Good better best
     Little less least
