UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS
I am glad to apply for the M. Sc. Automotive Engineering program at the
University of Leeds. I was attracted to the field of Automotive Engineering since I
was a kid and also when I was doing my undergraduate in-plant training at TVS
Motor Company Limited, Hosur, India. During this training period, I learned the
basics of manufacturing parts and techniques, working of the vehicle system,
assembly techniques, and production management. This training and my long-
lasting interest in the field of Automobiles got me curious in learning more about
vehicles and this triggered me to apply for the Master's program in Automotive
Engineering.

About Me

I am an aspiring and an engineer soon to be, currently pursuing my

Undergraduate degree in Mechatronics Engineering (B. E) at Kongu Engineering
College, Erode, India. Due to my passion for cars and the emerging field of Electric
Vehicles, I chose Mechatronics as my Undergraduate program. I gained knowledge
of Embedded systems, Control systems, Kinematics and Dynamics of Machines, 3D
designing and analysis, Electrical machines, Power Electronics, Automotive
Electronics systems, Programming languages such as Python, C, and LabVIEW
during my Bachelor’s program. I have worked on various projects during my
undergraduate programs such as Automatic Kapok Separating Machine, Smart
Ration Stores for Smart Cities, and Automatic Disinfectant System for Hospital
Beds. I learned how to automate a process and control them from all these projects.
Also, there were a plethora of chances for me to learn about several components and
machines that can be used in automation processes. My favourite subjects during the
whole study period were Basics of Mechanical Engineering, which helped me to
learn about engines hands-on and on how to design them, and Electrical Machines,
which taught me about different motors in several applications. I gained a humongous
interest in electrical machines because it was the first day of the class and my teacher
started the subject with the application of electrical motors in electrical vehicles. It was
the prime reason why these became my favourite papers. Currently, I am working on
a Project proposal at Ford India Private Limited, Chennai as an internship for 6
months in the field of braking. I have gained plenty of great experiences while
working on the projects and internships mentioned.
Philosophy in Life

I strongly believe that Manners maketh man. The way we behave in society
shows how we were raised by our elders. With all the science humankind has known
and with which the technology we create every day should be of greater use and
protect every living being. Everyone knows a famous quote “Garland in the hands of
a monkey”. This quote is a simple example of how a wonderful concept can be
misused. It solely depends on the personality of the character that creates and uses the
technology. Everything finally done, should be for the greater good and harmony.

Reasons for choosing University of Leeds

The Prominent reason for choosing Automotive Engineering at the University

of Leeds is because of my passion for Automobiles and the curriculum offered by
Leeds. I love this program and I feel that my career and necessary skills can be
brought up to another level by this program. I was inspired and was urged, by the
various projects undertaken by the students at the university and the Student and
Alumni Profiles, to apply to Leeds. The videos I saw in YouTube and the articles from
the website made me know more about the facilities available, the educational
standards, and the wonderful career options after the degree program at the
University of Leeds. As this is a specialized course, there will be students from various
countries and there will be more people with greater interests in this field than me to
work with, and I hope to have a great opportunity to gain and disseminate
knowledge at Leeds.

What am I capable of?

I have a handful of experience in working with Mechatronics systems and

Vehicles. I am a person with strong mathematical, analytical, and programming
skills coupled with knowledge of automobiles and robotics. As I have worked on
many real-time projects, I am capable of solving practical difficulties that shall arise
in projects during my study period at Leeds. Apart from technical skills, I have
worked with students and professionals from various domains during my projects
and internships. It made me look at a problem with different perspectives in solving
it. The Master’s Program in Automotive Engineering will be a great step towards my
passion and a huge kick start to achieve my future goals.

I am eagerly waiting for an opportunity to explore new technologies in the field

of Automotive Engineering at the University of Leeds. Thanking you in advance for
your time in considering my application Sir/Madam, and I wish to receive a positive
response from your side.

Yours Sincerely,
Naveen Saravanan Shanmuga Sundaram
