12 Chemistry HL Assignment 1 (FA)

Marks 20 Time 30 min

1. Assign oxidation states to all elements in the following compounds. [2]

K2Cr2O7 and Na2O2

2.Use oxidation states to deduce which species is oxidized and which is reduced in the following
reactions:

I2(aq) + SO32–(aq) + H2O(l) → 2I–(aq) + SO42–(aq) + 2H+(aq) [2]

3.Refer to the activity series pasted below to predict whether the following reactions will occur:

(a) ZnCl2(aq) + 2Ag(s) → 2AgCl(s) + Zn(s) [2]

(b) 2FeCl3(aq) + 3Mg(s) → 3MgCl2(aq) + 2Fe(s) [2]

4. Manganate (VII) ions oxidise hydrogen peroxide to oxygen gas. The reaction is carried out
with both species under acidic conditions.

(i) Identify the oxidizing agent and reducing agent in this reaction. [2]

(ii) write the half equation for the oxidation reaction. [1]
(iii) Write the half equation for the reduction reaction [1]

(iv) Deduce overall equation for this redox reaction. [2]

5. Alcohol levels in blood can be determined by a redox titration with potassium dichromate,
K2Cr2O7, according to the following equation.

C2H5OH(aq) + 2Cr2O72–(aq) + 16H+(aq) → 2CO2(g) + 4Cr3+(aq) + 11H2O(l)

(a) Determine the alcohol percentage in the blood by mass if a 10.000 g sample of blood requires

9.25 cm3of 0.0550 mol.dm–3 K2Cr2O7, solution to reach equivalence. [4]

(b) Describe the change in colour that would be observed during the titration. [2]
