INTRODUCTION

What is Distillation?

Distillation is the process that occurs when a liquid

sample is volatilized to produce a vapor that is
subsequently condensed to a liquid richer in the more
volatile components of the original sample.

The volatilization process usually involves heating the

liquid.

03
Solar distillation is the
INTRODUCTION process in which solar
energy is used to evaporate
water and it’s condensate is
collected within the same
closed system.
So What is Solar Distillation?
Thus it uses the energy from
sunlight to separate
freshwater from salts or other
contaminants.

04
About 79 percent of water available on earth is salty,
20 percent is brackish (less salty water from well)
and only one percent is fresh

Most suitable for remote, arid, or semiarid regions for

DISTILLATION Simple design and extremely cost-effective

Easy to operate and maintain

No fossil energy depletion, hydrocarbon pollution and

environmental degradation.

Working

1. Solar radiation, after passing through the roof

is absorbed by the blackened surface of the
basin and thus increasing the temperature of
water.

2.The evaporated water increases the moisture

content, which gets condensed on the cooler
underside of the glass.

3.The condensed water slips down the slope

and is collected through the condensate
channel attached to the glass.

35% Efficiency of single slope solar water distillation is in the range of 35–45% and
productivity is less than 5L/m2 per day.

Factors affecting Performance Performance Improvement

1) Intensity of sunlight 1) Improving absorber performance

2) Depth of basin water through the use of an added inner heat
3) Thickness of glass cover storage system
4) Slope of glass cover Using Graphene Oxide (GO) dispersed in
5) Wind velocity paraffin, as phase-change materials
6) Temperature difference between water (PCMs)
and glass plate
7) Free surface area of water 2) Use of reflectors
8) Selective surface coatings The efficiency of a still can be increased
by installing mirrors on its side walls.
9) Insulation
