Implicit Bias against International Students

International learners endure more problems while learning. Most of their problems are

perpetuated by the aspect of implicit bias against them. Therefore, the paper aims to discuss

some solutions to implicit bias against international students.

Emphasizing moral implications

An essential matter concerning implicit bias in the education organization is that most

domestic student takes race labels for granted, often believing that they are not harming the

discrimination victims. Mostly, it is unusual for discrimination to be existing locally. Still,

international learners will feel destabilized, particularly when domestic learners decide to use

over-generalizing remarks and views based on an international student's ethnic group. Implicit

biases have been analyzed through different history, anthropology, sociology, and even political

sciences can explain why biases can happen at a local, global, and national level.

One example of implicit personal biases that can be formed and understood at a local,

national, and global level is how Muslim women wear their headscarves as part of their religion.

When it comes to Muslim women, they are typically stereotyped because of their culture and

lack of knowledge. A study was conducted to show that biases are reduced if an individual

knows the Muslim religion. Having the ability to emphasize moral implications on individuals

can significantly reduce prejudice locally, globally, and nationally.

Shaping People’s Behavior

One's belief system always shapes his opinions and attitudes about the self and the world

around him. In most cases, people fall into self-defeating beliefs, which in turn negatively affects

their lives. Luckily, there are appropriate ways that can be used to address this negative thinking.

Therefore, this literature review will be guided by a thesis discussing various ways teachers can
convert student self-defeating thoughts into positive self-talk to enhance effective learning and

performance. All human beings experience negative beliefs from time to time. How one deals

with his negative attitudes can mean the diversity between self-assurance versus panic, hopes

versus misery, mastery versus victimhood, and triumph versus defeats. Students are not

exempted from these experiences. Based on this factor, attitudes have an important influence on

the learning process and performance of students. Still, teachers can convert students' negative

learning attitudes, which can efficiently apply this technique to their teaching method.

Creating Emphasis on Gender Sexuality

Society has to be more concerned about the aspect of gender sexuality. Sexuality is

another broader social aspect that is mostly described by the sexual feelings and desirability that

we expand towards others but not necessarily having sex with them. This forms a larger implicit

bias among international students as most learners are forming gender sexuality identities. As a

result, various sexual identities occur, including straight people, implying that they have sexual

attractions to opposite-sex individuals. However, another category of people is attracted to

individuals of the same sex (Dennis, 2016). These include lesbian, women, and gay for men, and

bisexual for those attracted to both men and women.

The societal forces are responsible for creating broader differences between males and

females regarding behavior, preferences, opportunities, and treatment. It is due to this reason that

many societies view men as superior to women. For instance, educators worrying about girls and

women as poorly achieved in mathematics are evident. The depth content of the subject is left for

the male ones to explore. Today, the idea is expressed in a manner that all mathematical exams

are standardized in a manner that both men and women enjoy. Sex identities are also evident in

job hiring and employment. There are those job opportunities that require individuals that are
masculine enough to perform them. These kinds of jobs are majorly preserved for men. Many

people prefer higher male workers than female ones because men are more concerned and

committed to their work.

Racial Awareness

Race is also a rapidly growing issue in the current world. This idea is majorly grounded

on an individual's skin color. An individual's race can be looked down upon when it comes to a

point where skin color is considered a basic factor to consider when deciding who gets the job,

promotion, education, or even health services. Today, the Blacks in the current society,

especially the Whites, are viewed as the most inferior race. This is because of their dark skin

color, which leads to many of them being viewed as not intelligent than the whites who have

smooth and tender skin, making them think faster than the Blacks as they view, hence beating

their intelligence. This implies that society has forgotten that skin color is a genetic factor. This

means that the occurrence of differences in our skin colors happens because of melanin present

in our skin.

However, in the US, ethnic bias is experienced in several cases. This includes educational

levels and presentations. In the US, it is noted that the grades for international students,

especially the non-white for promotion, are higher. Also, the admission in the colleges for non-

whites proves to be hectic, especially in Harvard. This greatly undermines the Black Culture in

the United States due to the prejudice experienced by the White Race. For instance, ‘Perhaps a

good example of how Black students are punished for natural hairstyles is the reaction to

Zendaya Coleman's loss at the 2015 Academy Awards.
