ECM REPROGRAMMING FOR NISSAN VEHICLES

This amended version of NTB00-006a updates the Service Information and Service Procedure Sections
of the bulletin. Please refer to this bulletin (NTB00-006b) for complete information.
Please discard all previously released paper copies of NTB00-006a.

SERVICE INFORMATION
• ECM Reprogramming is available to update the ECM of selected 1999, 2000 and later
Nissan vehicles when it is determined to be necessary to do so.
• ECM Reprogramming allows the vehicle ECM operating program to be upgraded to the
latest operating specifications without removal or replacement of the ECM.
• An ECM that has been reprogrammed can be identified by the new ECM P/N displayed
by CONSULT-II.
NOTE: The updated software can be installed into a vehicle ECM without affecting
previously programmed NATS data.
IMPORTANT: The ECM should be reprogrammed only when required by a specific Nissan
Technical Bulletin or as otherwise directed by Nissan North America.
• ECM Reprogramming requires the use of ASIST, CONSULT-II with the Diagnostic
Software card (red/white color) and the ECU Reprogramming Software Card (orange
color).
• The ECU Reprogramming Software Card (orange color) is necessary to allow the
transfer of ECM Reprogramming Data from ASIST to the vehicle ECM.
• The ECM Reprogramming data needs to be loaded from ASIST before the card can be
used for Reprogramming.

CAUTION: The ECM can be permanently damaged if the Reprogramming procedure

is not followed exactly. Do not attempt Reprogramming if the vehicle or the
CONSULT-II batteries are low. Do not disconnect or disturb the CONSULT-II while
ECM Reprogramming is in progress. If the ECM is damaged, it must be replaced.

1/16
• This bulletin introduces the Reprogramming process.
• It outlines the procedure for transferring ECM Reprogramming data from the ASIST PC
to your CONSULT-II unit, as well as the procedure for using CONSULT-II to reprogram
an ECM.
• Refer to the ECU Reprogramming Software Operations Manual (in ASIST) for additional
information on using CONSULT-II for ECM Reprogramming.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
When ECM Reprogramming is required to repair a vehicle, a Technical Service Bulletin will
be issued.
ECM Reprogramming involves two general steps:
• Download the ECM Reprogramming data from ASIST to CONSULT-II.
• Use CONSULT-II to install the ECM Reprogramming data into the vehicle ECM.
Download ECM Reprogramming data from ASIST to CONSULT-II
1. Install the ECU Reprogramming Software Card (orange) into slot A of CONSULT-II (see
Figure 1).
Insert card into slot A (top)

Make sure card is fully seated TP010647

Figure 1
2a. Connect the AC power supply to CONSULT-II.
2b. Connect CONSULT-II to the ASIST PC with the special Ethernet cable (P/N 02002554,
printed on the cable) contained in the CONSULT-II kit.
NOTES:
• Connect the special Ethernet cable to CONSULT-II at the “PC port” located at the
bottom end of the CONSULT-II unit.
• Connect the special Ethernet cable to the ASIST PC by connecting it to the “Ethernet
card” connection port located on the back of the computer.
3. Confirm the CONSULT-II date and time is correctly set as follows:
A. With the ECU Reprogramming Software card in slot A, turn on CONSULT-II.
B. Touch "SUB MODE".

2/16
Figure 2
C. Touch "SET DATE".
• If date is not correct, touch the month, day or year as needed. Then adjust it by
using arrow keys. Once done, press "SAVE", press "BACK" and go to step D.
• If date is OK, press "BACK" and go to step D.
D. Touch "SET TIME".
• If time is not correct, touch the hour, minute or AM/PM as needed. Then adjust it
by using arrow keys. Once done, press "SAVE", press "BACK" and go to
step 4.
• If time is OK, press "BACK" and go to step 4.
4. Set the Ethernet (IP) Address of the ASIST PC and CONSULT-II as follows:
NOTE: If your ASIST terminal has been used to perform ECM Reprogramming before,
you may skip steps "A" through "I" below and proceed to step 5 on page 5.
If you are unsure whether your ASIST terminal has been already set up for ECM
Reprogramming, proceed to step "A" below.
A. On the ASIST PC, click "START", "SETTINGS", "CONTROL PANEL", and then
select "NETWORK".
B. When the "Network Configuration" screen appears (see Figure 3) select "TCP/IP".
Then select "PROPERTIES".

Figure 3

3/16
C. Compare Figure 4 below with the "TCP/IP PROPERTIES" screen on the ASIST PC.
• If the "IP ADDRESS" and "SUBNET MASK" appear EXACTLY as shown in
Figure 4, click "CANCEL" and close the "CONTROL PANEL" box. Now
continue to step "D".
• If the "IP ADDRESS" and "SUBNET MASK" do not match EXACTLY as shown
in Figure 4, change the numbers so that they do. Click "OK", reboot the
computer to save the new IP Address, and continue to step "D".

Figure 4
D. On CONSULT-II Touch "CONFIGURE ETHERNET".
E. Check that the Ethernet (IP) Address is 192.168.001.002 and the Mask is
255.255.255.000 (see Figure 5).

Figure 5
• If the Ethernet (IP) Address already matches the address listed in step "E"
above, press "COPY" to print the Address for future reference, turn off
CONSULT-II and proceed with step 5 below.
• If the Ethernet (IP) Address does not match the address listed in step "E" above,
proceed with step "F" below to correctly set the CONSULT-II Ethernet (IP)
address.

4/16
F. To change, touch the Address number on the CONSULT-II screen (titled "Configure
Ethernet"). A numeric keypad will appear (see Figure 6).

Figure 6
G. Use the keypad to change the Address and Mask to the correct number.
H. Touch "SAVE" and then press "COPY" to print the Address for future reference.
I. Turn off CONSULT-II to allow the new address to be saved in memory, then proceed
with step 5 below.
5. Launch ASIST. From the ASIST PC main menu screen, select "CONSULT UTILITIES"
(see Figure 7).
