CALCULATION OF ANODE RESISTANCE (PLACED VERTICALLY)

֍ Resistance of a Single Rod Shaped Anode Positioned Vertically in the Earth

● Condition-1: For Anodes placed directly on Earth

▶ Using Dwight’s modified equation as follows:

𝜌 8𝐿
𝑅= {ln( ) − 1}
2𝜋𝐿 𝑑
Where, INPUT DATA
ρ = Resistivity of soil ρ= 10.00 Ω-m
L = Length of Anode L= 1.00 m
d = Diameter of Anode d= 0.040 m
R = Resistance of vertical anode to remote earth (Ω) R= 6.84 Ω

Anode backfill

L Anode L

d d
Fig (a): Anode placed directly on Earth Fig (b): Anode placed in backfill

● Condition-2: Anodes placed in low resistivity Backfill

▶ Using Dwight’s modified equation as follows:

𝜌 8𝐿
𝑅= {ln( ) − 1}
2𝜋𝐿 𝑑
Where, INPUT DATA
ρ = Resistivity of soil ρ= 10.00 Ω-m
L = Length of Anode bed L= 1.20 m
d = Diameter of Anode bed d= 0.040 m
R = Resistance of vertical anode to remote earth (Ω) R= 5.95 Ω

Result:
Case-1: Resistance of Single Vertical Anode to remote Earth (placed Directly in Earth)
Anode Resistance, R = 6.84 Ω
Case-2: Resistance of Single Vertical Anode to remote Earth (placed in backfill)
Anode Resistance, R = 5.95 Ω

Note:
This equation is applicable where L>>d, soil resistivity is homogeneous, and the anode is not located well
below grade.

For galvanic anodes surrounded by low resistivity sulfate-rich select backfill (typically ρbackfill < 100 Ω-cm) the
outside dimensions of the packaged anode can be used in the calculation rather than the actual casting dimensions.
This also applies to impressed current anodes that are surrounded by coke backfill material. The outside dimensions
of the coke column can be used in Equation without appreciably affecting its accuracy.
