IV. THEORY OF DISCUSSION

The Direct Shear Test is one of the oldest tests used to determine the shearing stress
of soil. During the past years, however it had been replaced by the Triaxial Test because
there are several defects in the test itself. This test is one of the simplest methods of
determining the shear strength of cohesive and non-cohesive soils. The test is carried out
on either undisturbed samples or remolded samples. To facilitate the remolding purpose, a
soil sample may be compacted at optimum moisture content in a compaction mold. Then
specimen for the direct shear test could be obtained using the correct cutter provided.
Alternatively, sand sample can be placed in a dry state at a required density, in the
assembled shear box. A normal load is applied to the specimen and the specimen is sheared
across the pre-determined horizontal plane between the two halves of the shear box.
Measurements of shear load, shear displacement and normal displacement are recorded.
The test is repeated foe two or more identical specimens under different normal loads.
From the results, the shear strength parameters can be determined.

In this laboratory, a direct shear device will be used to determine the shear strength
of a cohesionless soil (i.e. angle of internal friction (f)). From the plot of the shear stress
versus the horizontal displacement, the maximum shear stress is obtained for a specific
vertical confining stress. After the experiment is run several times for various vertical-
confining stresses, a plot of the maxi mum shear stresses versus the vertical (normal)
confining stresses for each of the tests is produced.

V. PROCEDURE
Preparation of Sample for Cohesive Soil
1. Measure the height and diameter of the specimen rings and calculate their weight.
Clamp the rings together with three bolts.
2. From the sample tube extrude a sample approximately 3 in long. Cut the soil with a
wire saw.
3. Use the specimen trimmer to trim the soil sample to a diameter of 2 ½ in.
4. Place the specimen into the specimen rings.
5. Trim both the top and bottom faces of the specimen flush with the rings.
6. Weight the rings and specimen together to obtain specimen weight.
7. From the soil trimmings, obtain at least two representative specimens for water
content determination.
Remolded Sample
1. Immediately after shearing the undisturbed specimen, quickly remove it from the
machine. Wrap it in a bar sheet and remold thoroughly with the fingers. They should
be done thoroughly with every precaution to prevent loss of moisture from the soil.
2. Bolt the two rings together (the rings should be properly cleaned). Work the
remolded soil into the rings, if the soil is not enough, a small amount of the sample
remolded soil may be added.
3. Trim the top and bottom faces flush with the rings.
Shearing Test
The procedure for the shear test are the same for bot undisturbed and remolded
specimens.
1. For undrained test, place a thin piece of plastic sheet at the bottom of the chamber
on top of the pose stone.
2. Set the rings (with specimen) firmly in the groove, the base of the immersion
chamber. Bolt heads should be up.
3. Insert bolts in the three headed holes remaining the upper ring turning them until
they bear firm against the lower ring.
4. Set the upper-ring-stop firmly on the upper sample ring and move the assembly so
that the ring stop bear against the base lugs.
5. Place the solid lucite block and loading block on the specimen, then replace the
loading beam.
