Introduction

Welcome to Junior High School. You have entered another phase of your life. You are now in
one the most exciting yet challenging years of being a student. Since this is your first time in high school,
expect to meet new friends and new set of teachers. Learn new things, too! Your teachers are here to
support and guide you in your journey to have a deeper self-discovery.
The transition from elementary to high school entails a lot of adjustments. Hence, you need to be
mindful on the differences between the two. As you reached this far, there is a need to modify how you
manage yourself and habits to pass this grade level. We hope that this module helps you to have a smooth
transition from grade school to high school, most especially in your academic tasks or school work.
With the technological advancement nowadays, our time management and study habits have also
evolved. Internet has become a good friend of most of the learners who are searching to understand their
assignment or even the class lessons without the aid of physical books. Some libraries now offer online
learning resources which are very useful for a learner like you. However, there are still schools that rely
heavily on physical books or learning materials due to varied reasons and considerations. Resonating on
the said premises, you need to adjust your own time management and study habits based on your set up,
available resources and the target academic goal.
This module focuses on how you can make your time management and study habits serve a vital
role in making your Grade 7 adjustment smooth while attaining your target academic goal.
The activities will bring you the opportunities to see how relevant your current study habits are,
and the things that you need to change or even improve.
Enjoy and discover the beauty of learning.

Keep in Mind
Suggested Time Allotment: 25 minutes

Here are some terms you need to understand.

Study – the activity or process of learning about something by reading, memorizing facts, attending
school, etc. (as defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary)
Habit – a usual way of behaving: something that a person does often in a regular and repeated way (as
define by Merriam-Webster Dictionary)
Study Habits – is a well-planned and deliberate pattern of study, which has attained a form of
consistency on the part of the students towards understanding academic subjects and passing examination
(as defined in the research by Evans Atsiaya Siahi and Julius Maiyo)
Let’s take a look at some of the things you need to know.
Tips to Develop Effective Study Habits
1. Have a specific time to study. A routine helps you to develop mental preparedness. It will also
condition yourself to do the school work. Be particular on the exact time of your classes (for
online, TV and radio-based learning modalities) and set the time for you to do the self-learning
modules (SLM). Whatever learning modality you’re using, consistency with the time matters.
2. Follow your plan. Delaying a study session is only procrastinating and can lead to rushed work
later. Your self-discipline will be challenged if you are studying from home. That’s why, your
plan will direct you on how you manage your time not only for school work but for other
responsibilities you have at home.
3. Do the difficult assignment first when mental energies are working very well. You know
better when your mind is very responsive and when you’re having a hard time to process things.
However, you also need to consider the deadlines and other aspects that have to be accounted for.
4. Ask for help when needed. In the absence of physical teacher, you may need to ask the nearest
adults at home to help you understand the lesson. If possible, you may communicate with your
teachers to unlock your difficulties.
5. Take short breaks. Sitting for a long period of time requires break. You may use the time to do
body stretching, relax your eyes and muscles or eat your snack or meal.
6. Maintain a positive attitude even with difficult subject. Having a negative attitude toward a
hard subject will not make it easier for you. Therefore, instead of focusing on the negative side,
exert your effort on different ways to understand it. This will redirect your actions in helping
yourself rather than magnifying your unhelpful attitude toward the subject.
7. Attend classes regularly. Classes are conducted because they follow certain sequence and
arrangement of lessons and activities. Therefore, being in class on a daily basis will help yourself
to complete the tasks expected for a student like you.
8. Practice concentration and focus. Remove all possible distractions around you if possible. If
you’re studying in a limited place where noise and other interruptions are beyond your control,
find a safe, quiet and comfortable place where you can have a 100% attention on your studies.
9. Write your assignments on a notebook. It pays to be organized with your things most
especially with your studies. If you have eight subjects, definitely, each will have an assignment.
For you to avoid from missing and forgetting to do your homework, you need to be very keen on
writing down the details of your assignment regularly. Otherwise, no one will do it for you.
10. Keep your supplies in your study place. Before starting your study session, be sure to prepare
and arrange the needed things in your area. Practicing this will help you to have a smooth and
hassle-free time.
Why is it so important to plan your study session? Just like a regular activity, everything has to be
organized, calculated and placed. In this way, you can have clear view of your activities involving your
studies and other tasks. You can feel a sense of direction on what you do daily. You prevented yourself
from rushing which causes too much stress and you can develop a sense of self-discipline to follow your
own schedule which promotes concentration on what you currently do.

Introduction

Have you ever felt the urge of doing a lot of things your way but ended up considering its
repercussions and negative impact? Then,
suddenly you found yourself following
instructions because that’s the systematic
way of doing things. We all have our
impulses, and sometimes, we have the
tendency to just follow what we feel
without even thinking if it will place us in
a regretful situation. It takes certain control
and mindfulness to catch ourselves doing
irrational things. Our self-control will save
us from suffering the consequences of our
impulsive actions and eventually
contribute in our maturity as an individual.
You also need to factor in your
habits as a good citizen which include the practice of your rights. In this way, you can expand your
understanding on how you can gain self-control and on how you can improve yourself. So allow this
module to provide you the structure in understanding self-discipline and habits of a good citizen,
including your rights as a child.

Keep in Mind
Suggested Time Allotment: 30 minutes

Nobody’s perfect, as the saying goes. We are all capable of committing mistakes. We have our
ugly moments. Despite those unpleasant experiences in the past, we learn new things and eventually make
these as our markers of improvement. It takes certain maturity and openness to develop self-discipline.
You need it not because your parents or teachers said so, but because it is for your own good. Self-
discipline is the ability to take control of yourself, particularly your behavior, emotions and impulses from
committing thoughtless and irrational behavior that usually results in unpleasant and negative
experiences. It takes time and process to develop self-discipline. It requires awareness to fully understand
how it works.
Before you achieve it, it is important that you have a deeper understanding of yourself and the
situations around you. You need to be mindful of the triggers of your lack of self-discipline. For instance,
if you know that you cannot resist chatting with your friends on social media while doing the school
tasks, then, you might want to log out or switch off your device so you can focus. If you think that you
cannot bear a certain situation and might lose your temper, you may consider avoiding it.
Try to imagine your life without self-discipline. What would it look like? You may do things
based on your impulse without considering its effects to others and to your future actions.
Self-discipline makes you control your actions. It prevents you from making the same mistakes.
Discipline gives you control over your life.
11 | H o m e r o o m G u i d a n c e
As part of having self-discipline, it is important that you know the habits of a good citizen and the
children’s rights. It can serve as a guide in your development of self-discipline.
There are many good habits that impact your immediate community. The following are just some
of them:
a. Follow the policies set by the community and government.

b. Try to find ways how on you can help others in your own capacity.

c. Always be respectful and considerate to others.

d. Be responsible and accountable to your actions and decisions.

e. Preserve and protect nature.

f. Be part of the solution and not the problem.

g. Decide based on data and logic.

One of the ways to be a good citizen is to respect the rights of others. Do you know your rights as
a child and as a citizen of the Philippines? Rights are entitlements which everyone should claim and hold.
Every person has these rights simply because they are human beings.

Human rights are the same for all human beings regardless of their sex, race, color, language,
national origin, age, class, religion or political beliefs, existing capacities, and abilities. Human rights
cannot be taken away. They give people the freedom to choose how they live and how they express
themselves. They also guarantee people the means necessary to satisfy their basic needs, such as food,
housing, and education. Moreover, human rights protect people against abuse.
Children’s rights are human rights. The enjoyment or violation of human rights of parents and
people in the community affects children’s enjoyment of their own rights.
Here are the rights of the child, according to Presidential Decree 603, or The Child and Youth
Welfare Code.
All children shall be entitled to the rights herein set forth without distinction as to legitimacy,
illegitimacy, sex, social status, religion, political antecedents, and other factors.

(1) Every child is endowed with the dignity and worth of a human being from the moment of his
conception, as generally accepted in medical parlance, and has therefore, the right to be born
well.
(2) Every child has the right to a wholesome family life that will provide him with love, care and
understanding, guidance and counseling, and moral and material security.
(3) Every child has the right to a well-rounded development of his personality to the end that he
may become a happy, useful and active member of society
(4) Every child has the right to a balanced diet, adequate clothing, sufficient shelter, proper
medical attention and all the basic physical requirements of a healthy and vigorous life.
(5) Every child has the right to be brought up in an atmosphere of morality and rectitude for the
enrichment and the strengthening of his character.
(6) Every child has the right to an education commensurate with his abilities and to the
development of his skills for the improvement of his capacity for service to himself and to his
fellowmen.
(7) Every child has the right to full opportunities for safe and wholesome recreation and
activities, individual as well as social, for the wholesome use of his leisure hours.
(8) Every child has the right to protection against exploitation, improper influences, hazards, and
other conditions or circumstances prejudicial to his physical, mental, emotional, social and
moral development.
(9) Every child has the right to live in a community and a society that can offer him an
environment free from pernicious influences and conducive to the promotion of his health
and the cultivation of his desirable traits and attributes.
(10) Every child has the right to the care, assistance and protection of the State, particularly
when his parents or guardians fail or unable to provide him with his fundamental needs for
growth, development and improvement.
(11) Every child has the right to an efficient and honest government that will deepen his faith
in democracy and inspire him with the morality of the constituted authorities both in their
public and private lives.
12 | H o m e r o o m G u i d a n c e
(12) Every child has the right to grow up as a free individual, in an atmosphere of peace,
understanding, tolerance, and universal brotherhood, and with the determination to contribute
his share in the building of a better world.
Human rights have limitations. The 1987 Philippine Constitution has an article about the Bill of
Rights, specifically Article 3. These rights are not entirely set in stone and a person’s human rights can
sometimes be limited.
Examples:
1. The freedom of speech is limit by the libel law, bullying and cyber bullying law.
2. The right of people to gather is limited by other laws on peace and public order.
3. The right to freedom of expression is limited by the law against slander.
4. The right to freedom is limited if you are accused of a criminal act.

What Will You Do?
There are similarities and differences among individuals. Some of these are obvious, others are
not. It is important to recognize and respect your similarities and differences with the people around you
in order to strengthen your relationship with them.

Read each situation below and answer the questions. Write your answer on a clean sheet of paper.
Situation 1:
Your younger sister shows difficulty in her school work and you would like to help her. However, you
also need to submit your school requirements the next day. What would you do?
Situation 2:

Respect Uniqueness
Being unique is something that you can be proud of. Could you imagine if the people in your
community have the same face? That would be a challenge to determine who you are interacting with.
Hence, the uniqueness of each person serves them to be recognized by others. You can easily identify
your friends through their faces, preferences, gestures, and expressions. Keeping these in mind, we learn
how to respect their individuality and establish healthy relationship with them.
Here are some practical and effective ways on how to show respect for other’s uniqueness:
Recognize individual differences
As we interact with other people, we tend to compare and differentiate our personal traits,
characteristics and behavior from others. We can easily identify similarities and differences amongst
people. It is essential that we value our individual differences so that we will be able to understand the
reason behind other person’s actions, beliefs and behavior. Acceptance of individual differences will help
us in establishing healthy relationships.
Empathize
To empathize means to see others’ perspective, to recognize others’ without judgment, and to
understand others’ feelings. Showing empathy can help you in identifying the needs of others, in building
emotional connection, and in establishing meaningful relationships.
For example, you saw your classmate crying because he failed in the examination. You can
empathize by listening to his concern and offer words of encouragement.
Speak with kindness
Proper communication is essential in showing respect for others. The best way to communicate is
through our words and actions, that is why it is important that we understand how to speak with kindness.
You need to properly choose your words and the timing and the tone of your voice. It is important that
before we speak, we also listen. Being kind in words and in actions would lead to healthy relationships.
On the other hand, shouting or being rude to others leads to misunderstanding, fighting and broken
relationships.
Promote positivity

16 | H o m e r o o m G u i d a n c e
Positive words and actions can influence the quality of our relationships. Remember to use words
of appreciation, gratitude and encouragement and show actions like smiling, nodding or tapping the
shoulder to show affirmation.
Express personal thoughts and feelings in an appropriate manner
You can express your thoughts and feelings by communicating with your family members,
teachers, friends or other people whom you trust. You can also have a personal journal or an e-journal in
your mobile phone. You can also express your thoughts and feelings through creative arts.
Expressing thoughts and feelings in an appropriate manner will promote personal growth,
harmonious relationships and respect for others’ uniqueness.

Care to show compassion

Caring to show compassion is also showing respect for others. The best way to show compassion
is to be a friend. Being a friend means being a good listener, showing good example, having concern for
the welfare of others, and providing support during times of difficulty.
Treat everyone with sincerity
Treating everyone with sincerity means being honest in our words and actions. We can show
sincerity by keeping our promises, giving honest comments, being consistent in our behavior toward
others, and accepting our personal limitations. However, we need to be mindful on how we express our
sincerity to still emphasize our good intention.

Introduction

Where do you want to go? In our present situation, there are restrictions that have to be followed.
You might already be missing a lot of things especially seeing places, events and people. But more than
that, where do you really want to go?
Have you ever tried to seriously ponder on where do you see yourself, maybe 10 or 15 years from
now? Have you also imagined what you would be wearing; in what kind of environment you would be
working or what you would be enjoying doing for eight hours or more of your day?
American political leader, inventor, and publisher Benjamin Franklin is credited with the saying,
“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail!”
This module aims to give you an overview on career planning. Knowing more about self, looking closely
with your desired future profession, and setting for an action plan perhaps may better encourage Grade 7
students like you to be serious in taking careful little steps in planning your career.

and the media may influence your future decision

future career. In the career planning process, it is important that you consider the expenses /

the career that you would like to pursue. You may look into the labor market information locally
and globally, business opportunities and other related training programs that you can participate.

you see yourself in the future. A common example is your favorite teacher or guidance counselor
