PART 1 Learning Focus: Noun (Concrete and Abstract- Singular and Plural)

Noun is a word that refers to a person, place, thing, event, substance and quality.
There are several classifications of noun, but now we will study two types of noun;
abstract noun and concrete noun.
 Concrete noun: a noun which refers to a real or physical object (benda yang dapat
disentuh)

 Abstract Noun: a noun which refers to a thing which does not exist as material /
physical object.
Singular noun
Every single noun need article, usually article a, an, and the are used for it. Example: an
apple, a mango and the earth.

Article “A” is used when the pronounce of the noun is started with consonant sound.

 We use The with the names of ocean, seas, rivers, deserts, groups of islands and
mountain ranges. We also use the with the with the names of countries when these are
plural, and the name of countries which include the words Kingdom, Republic, and
States:
the Pacific Ocean, the Mediterranean, the Nile, the Gobi Desert, the Bahamas, the
Alps, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom
 We do not use The with the names of lakes, mountains, continents, countries, cities,
towns, villages and streets: Lake Superior, Mount Everest, Asia, France, London,
Oxford Street
 We usually use The before the places we visit in a town:
the cinema, the theatre, the post office, the bank, the supermarket, the chemist’s
 We sometimes use a/an with these words to mean ‘one of many’. Compare:
I went to the cinema on Saturday. There’s a new cinema in the West Street.
 We do not usually use The with home, school, college, work, town, hospital, prison:
I go to work at eight o’clock.

Exercise 1: Read this short text and identify the singular and plural noun. Change the
font colors. Red for singular, Blue for Plural nouns

Building, Room, and Seating Design

Some buildings and rooms seem to encourage human interaction. They appear to have
invisible signs posted that say, “Come in,” ”Hello,” “Come closer,” or “Welcome.” Still others
seem to communicate coldness and be saying, “No visitors,” “Stay away,” or “Keep out.” I
remember the living room of my youth, and its always new looking, always clean furniture,
rugs, and fireplace. Few people ever sat on the chairs, a sofa, and in fourteen years the
fireplace was never once lit. Mehrabian (1971) reminds us of countless living rooms – “as
beautifully furnished as a showroom but left just as unoccupied while the guests cluster
happily in the kitchen and enjoy themselves there.” A bedroom seem show a privacy, no one
will easy come in to it. A bed size also show owner style.
