PART 1 Learning Focus: Noun (Concrete and Abstract- Singular and Plural)
Noun is a word that refers to a person, place, thing, event, substance and quality.
There are several classifications of noun, but now we will study two types of noun;
abstract noun and concrete noun.
Concrete noun: a noun which refers to a real or physical object (benda yang dapat
disentuh)
Abstract Noun: a noun which refers to a thing which does not exist as material /
physical object.
Singular noun
Every single noun need article, usually article a, an, and the are used for it. Example: an
apple, a mango and the earth.
Article “A” is used when the pronounce of the noun is started with consonant sound.
A Plane A Book A Pen
A Fork A Ring A University
Article “An” is used when the pronounce of the noun is started with vocal sound.
An Air conditioner An Egg An Owl
An hour An Ice cream An Honest man
Plural noun
A singular noun ending in o, s, x, z, ch, sh makes the plural by adding-es.
Singular Regular Plural
We use The with the names of ocean, seas, rivers, deserts, groups of islands and
mountain ranges. We also use the with the with the names of countries when these are
plural, and the name of countries which include the words Kingdom, Republic, and
States:
the Pacific Ocean, the Mediterranean, the Nile, the Gobi Desert, the Bahamas, the
Alps, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom
We do not use The with the names of lakes, mountains, continents, countries, cities,
towns, villages and streets: Lake Superior, Mount Everest, Asia, France, London,
Oxford Street
We usually use The before the places we visit in a town:
the cinema, the theatre, the post office, the bank, the supermarket, the chemist’s
We sometimes use a/an with these words to mean ‘one of many’. Compare:
I went to the cinema on Saturday. There’s a new cinema in the West Street.
We do not usually use The with home, school, college, work, town, hospital, prison:
I go to work at eight o’clock.
Exercise 1: Read this short text and identify the singular and plural noun. Change the
font colors. Red for singular, Blue for Plural nouns
If you want to use adjective and noun in a sentence that is put after subject, you have to use
to be (is, am, are).
TO BE ( IS, AM ARE)
To be is a linking verb. It links the subject and adj/ noun/ adv of place in a sentence

Plural things Andi and Budi are best friends.
