Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions,
directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand
each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each

SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you
need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of
the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-
check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust
that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they
can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any
part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and
tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering
the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) is a broader term for
Information Technology (IT), which refers to all communication technologies,
including the internet, wireless networks, cell phones, computers, software,
middleware, videoconferencing, social networking, and other media applications
and services enabling users to access, retrieve, store, transmit, and manipulate
information in a digital form.

EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES

 Artificial Intelligence (AI) is intelligence demonstrated by machines, unlike

the natural intelligence displayed by humans and animals, which involves
consciousness and emotionality.
Examples of online applications using AI: Google maps, Waze, conversation
marketing bot
Robotics is the field of computer science and engineering concerned
with creating devices that can move and react to sensory input, it is a form
of artificial intelligence.
Ex. Alcohol dispensing robot designed by Felta Multimedia Philippines

https://web.facebook.com/watch?ref=search&v=232444667906201&external_log_id=4d579c48-0ac7-
4b32-a90b-675f44546500&q=alcohol%20dispensing%20robot

 Biometrics is a technology used to measure and analyze human body

characteristics such as DNA, fingerprints, eye retinas and irises, voice
patterns, facial patterns, and hand measurements. The main purpose of
biometrics for authentication. It commonly featured in smartphones and
laptops.

 Computer-assisted translator (CAT) is the use of computers to assist the

translation of one or more natural languages into another, and vice versa.
Ex. Google Translate

 Quantum Cryptography is the science of encoding and decoding

information or messages which depends on Physics, not Mathematics. It is
used for information privacy and security.

 Cloud computing is the delivery of different services through the Internet.

These resources include tools and applications like data storage, servers,
databases, networking, and software. Instead of keeping files on a hard drive
or flash drive, cloud-based storage makes it possible to save them online. As
long as the device is connected to the internet, the saved date is accessible.
Cloud- a computer network where files and programs can be stored on the
internet.
Ex. the photographs are kept on the cloud rather than on hard drives.

Cloud storage (Online Storage) physically stores the data in large data
centers and computer servers and makes it available online through the
web. Users can access this data remotely using the Internet. It allows
users to remotely upload, store and retrieve their data online.

 Mobile Technologies
The popularity of smartphones and tablets has taken a major rise over the
years. This is largely because of the devices’ capability to do tasks that were
originally found in personal computers.

Types of mobile operating systems:

1. iOS – used in Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad
2. Android – an open-source operating system developed by Google. Being
open source means several mobile phone companies use this OS for free.
3. Blackberry OS – used in blackberry devices
4. Windows Phone OS – a closed source and proprietary operating system
developed by Microsoft
5. Symbian – the original smartphone OS used by Nokia devices
6. WebOS – originally used for smartphones; now used for smart TVs
7. Windows Mobile – developed by Microsoft for smartphones and pocket
PCs.

Mobile Networks
In order for a mobile tech device to connect to other devices or utilize the
internet, it must have access to a network that will allow it to transmit a
signal.

Cellular Networks –operate through radio networks distributed via cell

towers, which allows mobile devices to automatically switch frequencies to
their nearest geographical tower without interruption.

4G – Referring to the fourth generation of cellular service, 4G

operates on packet switching technology and organizes data into
smaller groupings for fast transmission before reassembling at the
destination.

5G – The fifth generation of network service requires the rollout of

new infrastructure for widespread adoption and operates at higher
frequencies in aggregated bands. This allows networks to access more
bandwidth and increase transmission speed. 5G is reported to be 20x
faster at sending and receiving signals than 4G.

Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) – Wi-Fi utilizes radio wave technology to

connect devices to localized hotspot routers. Internet providers allow
users to connect to their network but will not automatically pass
signals to a device without a Wi-Fi connection. Users will often have
the ability to make their Wi-Fi network available for public or private
use.
Bluetooth – Rather than connect devices to the internet, Bluetooth
networks connect devices to other devices via short-wavelength radio
waves.

 Assistive Media
It is a nonprofit service designed to help people who have visual and reading
impairments. A database of audio recordings is used to read to the user. You
may visit http://assistivemedia.org/ for several of their audio recordings.

ONLINE SYSTEMS: FUNCTIONS AND FLATFORMS

Online Platforms are integrated set of Internet based technologies and

applications which provide tools in creating information for ICT contents. It refers
to a base configuration which is programmed and is anchored to run a specific
software or an application.

ONLINE PLATFORMS

 COLLABORATION PLATFORM

limitation of the tool is that it may be too simple for some,
offering limited customization and very basic, stripped-down
features.

 Flowvella is available on the Mac App Store as a desktop
