Cleaning, Maintaining and Storing

Nursery Tools and Equipment
Tools and equipment are one of the important things needed in
running a nursery. Without them, nursery works will become hard and tedious.
It is a must that a nursery worker will acquire the technical know-how in
cleaning, maintaining and storing tools and equipment after every use to
prolong their usability.
As an Agricultural Crop Production student, you need to have this
knowledge and skill for you to properly help care and maintain the tools and
equipment you will be using in the nursery.

CLEANING, MAINTAINING AND STORING TOOLS AND

EQUIPMENT

Cleaning and maintaining nursery tools and equipment is one of the

important tasks in a nursery work. Just like plants and materials in the
nursery, tools and equipment must be also taken care of. When managed
properly, cost for purchasing new tools and equipment will be lessen. In order
to maintain the usability of nursery tools and equipment, reading the manual
or instructions provided by the manufacturer is the very first step you can do.
Labels in the packaging may contain regular servicing and maintenance
procedures that help prolong their life so that you won’t have to replace them
frequently.
The following procedures will help the nursery workers in cleaning and
storing the used tools and equipment in the nursery.
1. Remove plant debris, soil and residues of any kind in the used
tools and equipment. One can use a brush, cloth or water if
necessary.
2. Inspect the tools and equipment for physical damage which can
lead injury and accident. If there is any, repair them immediately.
3. Do an inspection with the tools and equipment for any missed dirt,
soil and residues, then clean them again if there is any.
4. Follow label instructions when disinfection chemicals are used. In
applying cleaning materials such as detergent and/or disinfection
chemicals do make sure that no spots are missed.
5. Rinse tools and equipment with safe water. Use a clean wet towel
and follow the same procedures for cleaning if there are parts of the
equipment that cannot be rinsed with water.
6. Dry the tools and equipment before storing.
7. Store the tools and equipment properly in their respective storage
area after drying them.
Looking after tools is very important. Keeping them in good condition
makes them easier and safer to use.
The following are some of the important reminders in cleaning,
maintaining and storing tools and equipment:
a. Metals. Painting and regular coating with oil can prevent
metals from rusting. Clean and wipe the metal part of a tool
and equipment with an oil rag after every use.

8
b. Sharpening. Keep tools sharp. This will lessen the effort and
strain while using them.
c. Washing. Wash tools and keep it dry before storage. Keeping
them clean can minimize the tools from having moving parts
size. The spread of pests and diseases caused by using
uncleaned tools may also be prevented.
d. Storing. Tools are less likely to be damaged, stolen and lost
when properly stored. Accidents and injuries caused by
unattended tools and equipment will be also prevented.

Make sure that the tools are free from foreign objects and dirt for it
may lessen the efficiency and safety when using them. Check for the
damaged parts and replace them promptly. Moving parts must be well
lubricated and applied with oil to prevent them from rusting. Oils must also be
applied at regular intervals following manufacturer’s recommendation.
Battery terminals must be kept free from corrosion and cover them with
a smear of petroleum jelly. Check regularly for the battery level and all
connections should be kept tight.
Cutting tools and sharp edges must be sharpen properly. Tools with
that have loose nuts, bolts and screws must be check and tighten properly.

CHECKING FOR UNDERSTANDING

Exercise 1: Match it in!
Direction: Match the problems encountered when using tools from column A
with the correct maintenance procedure to be applied in column B.

Column A Column B

___ 1.Cutting tools A. Cover with the smear of petroleum

jelly
___ 2.Rusted metal B. Keep it tighten
___ 3.Loose bolts and screws C. Dry them before storing
___ 4.Battery terminals D. Sharpen them always.
___ 5.Washed tools E. Apply with oil
