Q. Explain the reasons for the following:

1. Einstein left the school in Munich for good because he hated the school’s
regimentation and strict discipline
2. Einstein wanted to study in Switzerland rather than in Munich because it was a more
liberal city.
3. Einstein found in Mileva an ally against the ‘philistines’ with whom Einstein was
constantly at odds.
4. These tell that Einstein loved freedom. He was a liberal and cultured person.

Q. What did Einstein call his desk drawer at the patent office? Why?

Ans. Einstein called his desk drawer at the patent office, the “bureau of theoretical physics” .
he called It so because he used to store his newly developed idea secretly in that drawer.

Q. Why did Einstein write a letter to Franklin Roosevelt?

Ans. Einstein wrote a letter to Franklin Roosevelt to warn him about the effects of atomic
bomb explosions and its destructive potential.

Q. How did Einstein react to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

Ans. Einstein was deeply shaken by the extent of the destruction caused in Hiroshima and
Nagasaki. He wrote a public missive to the United Nations. In it he proposed the formation of
a world government.

Q. Where was Abdul Kalam’s house?

Ans. Abdul Kalam’s house was on the Mosque Street in Rameswaram in the earlier Madras
State.

Q. What do you think Dinamanti is the name of? Give a reason for your answer.

Ans. Dinamanti was probably the name of a newspaper. Abdul Kalam used to try and find the
stories of the Second World War, told by his brother-in-law, in the headlines in Dinamanti.

Q. Who were Abdul Kalam’s school friends? What did they later become?

Ans. Abdul Kalam had three good friends in school- Ramanadha Sastry, Aravindan and
Sivaprakasan. Ramanadha Sastry became the main priest as e took over the priesthood of the
Rameswarm temple from his father. Aravindan started the business of arranging transport for
visiting pilgrims. Sivaprakasan became a catering contractor for the Southern railways.

Q. How did Abdul Kalam earn his first wage?

Ans. Abdul Kalam earned his first wage by helping his cousin in catching the bundles of
newspaper thrown out of a moving train at the Rameswaram station during World War II.

Q. Had he earned any before that? In what way?

Ans. Abdul Kalam used to collect and sell tamarind seeds at a provision shop during the
Second World War. He earned one anna for a day’s collection and had earned money like this
before he started helping his cousin.

Q. How does the author describe (i) his father (ii1) his mother (iii) himself?

Ans. (i) Kalam belonged to a middle-class family. His father, Jainulabden was neither rich
nor educated. But, he was wise, honest and generous. He was self-disciplined and avaooided
inessential luxuries.

(ii) Kalam’s mother, Ashiamma was an ideal partner to her husband. She was good and kind.
Even though the family was not rich, she fed many people on a daily basis.

(ii) The author mentions that he had a secure childhood, both emotionally and materially. He
describes himself as a short boy with undistinguished looks. He was kind, honest, disciplined
and hard working.

Q. What characteristics does he say he inherited from his parents?

Ans. The author says that he inherited honesty and self-discipline from his father. From his
mother he received faith in goodness and deep kindness.

THE LOST CHILD

Q.What are the things the child sees on his way to the fair? Why does he lag behind?

The things that the child sees on his way to the fair are toys, sweets, roundabout, garlands and
balloons. The chi gets so fascinated by the things displayed at the shops that he stops at every
shop to take Look at the things kept there. This makes him lag behind. in the fair he wants
many things.

Q.What does he realize when he lost his way? Why does he move on without waiting for
an answer?
The child wants to buy a toy, burfi, a garland ofgulmohar, various colored balloons and enjoy
a ride in the roundabout. Hemoves on without walking for an answer because he knows that
his parents will refuse for these things.

Q.When does he realize that he has lost his way? How have his anxiety and insecurity
been described?

The Child sees a roundabout. He wants to go on the for their permission When he doesn't get
any reply, he tums to look at them but finds nobody with him This makes realize that he has
lost his way. The child starts to panic and cries bitterly. He runs here and there to look for his
parents. His clothes get muddy and torn. He weeps bitterly. Even the things which had
attracted him earlier lose their importance for him.

Q. Why does the lost child lose interest in the things that he had wanted earlier?

The child is lost in the fair. He is separated from his parents whom he cannot find. He doesn’t
know where to go and what to do. So, he is tensed and loses interest in the thing that he had
wanted earlier.

Q.What do you think happens in the end? Does the child find his parents?

As the child searches for his parents frantically he reaches a shrine. A kind-hearted man hears
his cries and saves him from the crowd. I think the man might have tried to look for the
child’s parents. The child’s parents too must have looked for him. The child might have been
reunited with his parents.
