Personal Statement (1000 words)

I pursued my undergraduate in Computer Science and Engineering with Data Science
specialization at PES University in Bangalore, the Silicon Valley of India. During my bachelor’s, I
was introduced to various interesting courses, of which I most enjoyed the ones on
Problem-Solving with C, Introduction to Python, Data Structures, and Design and Analysis of
Algorithms in addition to Data Science courses. The foundational courses allowed me to gain a
strong grasp of the basic concepts of the field. In my second year, I took the course on
Introduction to Data Science, which I found extremely intriguing. My interests were further
developed by the courses on Linear Algebra, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning,
and Natural Language Processing. These specialization-based subjects introduced me to the
world of data science, instilling in me the passion and curiosity to explore this field further.

I undertook research internships at the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi, Himachal Pradesh.
I worked on two projects under the Director of IIT Mandi’s guidance, one of them on “Network
usage pattern and failure analysis using Statistical Time Series Analysis and Neural Networks”
and the other on “Network usage pattern and failure prediction in context of outer world events”.
These projects helped me gain in-depth knowledge of the field, as well as develop crucial
technical skills in Data Visualization, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Anomaly Detection, and
others. In addition, as part of the PESU I/O Peer Teaching Initiative, I designed and delivered a
course on Big Data Hands on with Python to first and second year students. I also served as the
Initiative’s Deputy Manager of the Operations team. This experience helped me gain valuable
teaching experience, and also helped me understand the merits of imparting knowledge to
others.

In my final year, I undertook a credit-based research project on “Deep Learning and Statistical
Models for Detection of White Stem Borer Disease in Arabica Coffee”. I worked on this as part
of a 3 member team, in collaboration with The Coffee Board of India and ISRO (Indian Space
Research Organization). The project focused on creating Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)
models based on plant images for early detection of infestation. We used image processing, and
machine learning techniques. Statistical analysis of long-term climatic factors was also explored
for reliable detection and diagnosis of the infestation. A paper based on this research was
published and presented at the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing
Conference.

During my final semester, I interned at Hewlett Packard Enterprises (HPE), a core Research and
Development based product company. I worked on System Performance Monitoring and Fault
Prediction tool using ML concepts. After graduation, I continued working at the company as a
Software Engineer. I worked in HPE Servers Business Unit (BU) and currently working in
Storage Business Unit. My key responsibilities include secure and optimal software
development, devising innovative solutions for project assignments, designing, implementing
and testing end-to-end frameworks, and several other automation and maintenance tasks. I also
participated in the HPE Storage Hackathon where, as part of a four-member team, we
presented a proof of concept on an Automated Support ChatBot, winning the first prize. and am
currently taking initiatives to work on Data Science related projects.

The projects and initiatives I undertook helped enhance the overall productivity of both my team
and the organization. My hard work was acknowledged, and I was entrusted with delivering
Informational and Educational presentations to the team. Working in such a research-focused
environment helped me gain insight into the functioning of a leading company in the technology
field and allowed me to learn the current research trends in the industry. My time at HPE has
helped me gain essential technical skills and has also provided a platform for me to hone my
profile and grow as a professional.

Now that I have gained relevant experience and skills, I believe the time is ripe for me to pursue
my master’s. My academic and professional endeavors undoubtedly speak for my passion for
data science. I believe that the Georgia Tech OMSCS program is the right fit for me because
a degree at your eminent institute would provide me with the in depth knowledge and
numerous professional networking opportunities, which would act as a catalyst to my
career growth. I look forward to enhancing my knowledge by taking courses in Machine
Learning and Reinforcement Learning under the mentorship of Dr. Charles Isbel. After
graduation, I wish to work as a Data Scientist or Machine Learning Engineer in a Tier 1
company to contribute to prominent research-oriented projects. I hope to devise economical
technology based solutions to real-world problems and also launch a non-profit to provide
technical guidance and support to the underprivileged. To this extent, at GA Tech, I would like to
work at lucy labs under the guidance of Dr. David Joyner that seeks to research new initiatives
in affordable, accessible education, especially within online education.

I have the drive, passion, and technical aptitude to undertake graduate research successfully. If
given a chance, I could be an asset to your program and your institution. I thank you for this
opportunity, and look forward to being a part of your diverse student community.

I completed a bachelor’s degree in computer science with a data science specialization. As a
part of my degree, I took courses in Data Structures, Design and analysis of Algorithms,
Operating Systems, Computer Networks, and some courses on Data Science that allowed me
to explore this field.

Through various research and internship projects, I gained crucial technical skills in Machine
Learning and related areas. An internship with the prestigious Indian Space Research
Organization, enhanced my acumen in image processing and statistical analysis of complex
data. In addition, as part of a peer teaching initiative, I designed and delivered a course on ‘Big
Data Hands-on with Python,’ to freshman and sophomores in college, gaining valuable teaching
experience.

Working at Hewlett Packard Enterprise, a research and development company, as a software

developer, helped me understand what it really takes to design and develop a product and
deliver proper requirements. I developed secure and optimal software, used data science and
machine learning to solve problems related to customer experience, and took initiative to come up
with innovative and creative solutions.

I see a need to broaden my horizons, especially in areas related to algorithms, networks,

system design and advanced machine learning concepts, which has led me to the decision to
further my education in Computer Science with a specialization in the Machine Learning domain
at Georgia Tech. I believe that my curricular, research and professional experience will help me
to academically succeed in the rigorous graduate curriculum of this degree.
