Timing belt: removal/installation


Warnings and recommendations
Unless otherwise advised by the manufacturer, the following procedures are recommended:
Always fit a new timing belt after removal
Coolant pump renewal is recommended after timing belt removal
Check the tensioner and idler pulleys; renew if necessary
Never turn the engine in the direction opposite to that of normal operation
Check the belt(s) for cracks, fraying, wear and oil contamination
Note: The engine must be cold before timing belt adjustment
Note: Avoid bending, torsion or traction
General
Always check the timing marks before timing belt removal

Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Battery: procedures for disconnection/reconnection

Remove the right-hand front wheel


Remove the engine cover
Loosen the coolant pump pulley bolts

Slowly turn the crankshaft clockwise


Fit the camshaft alignment tool 303-376B

Lock the flywheel


Removal
Use the special tools 303-393, 303-393-02
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Battery: procedures for disconnection/reconnection

Remove the right-hand front wheel


Remove the engine cover
Loosen the coolant pump pulley bolts

Remove the crankshaft pulley

Note: Use a wooden block to support the engine

Remove the engine support cap
General
Remove the upper engine support
Always check the timing marks before timing belt removal

Remove the coolant pump pulley


Remove the timing belt cover

Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Battery: procedures for disconnection/reconnection

Remove the right-hand front wheel


Remove the engine cover
Loosen the coolant pump pulley bolts

Remove the engine mounting bracket

Turn the tensioner pulley anti-clockwise until the locking tool fits 303-1054
Note: The engine must be cold before timing belt adjustment
Note: Avoid bending, torsion or traction
General
Always check the timing marks before timing belt removal

Remove the timing belt


Remove the camshaft gearwheels
Use the special tool 205-072

Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Battery: procedures for disconnection/reconnection

Remove the right-hand front wheel


Remove the engine cover
Loosen the coolant pump pulley bolts
Installation
Refit the camshaft gearwheels
Note: Fit the bolt(s) finger-tight only

Fit the timing belt anti-clockwise, starting at the crankshaft gearwheel


Remove the tensioner locking tool

Refit the crankshaft pulley protection plate 9 Nm


Refit the crankshaft pulley
Renew the bolt(s)
Stage 1: 40 Nm
Stage 2: 90°

Tighten the camshaft gearwheels while holding them in place 60 Nm


Use the special tool to hold the camshaft(s) 205 - 072

Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Battery: procedures for disconnection/reconnection

Remove the right-hand front wheel


Remove the engine cover
Loosen the coolant pump pulley bolts

Note: The engine must be cold before timing belt adjustment

General
Always check the timing marks before timing belt removal

Remove the special tool 303-376B


Turn the crankshaft clockwise 1 3/4 turns
Fit the crankshaft locking tool 303-748
Slowly turn the crankshaft clockwise
The timing is set when the special tool(s) fit correctly 303-376B

Remove the special tool 303-376B


Remove the crankshaft locking tool 303-748
Refit the access plug 20 Nm
Refit the engine mounting bracket 55 Nm
Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Battery: procedures for disconnection/reconnection

Remove the right-hand front wheel


Remove the engine cover
Loosen the coolant pump pulley bolts

Fit the timing belt cover 9 Nm


Refit the coolant pump pulley

Refit the upper engine support A: 80 Nm, B: 10 Nm


Finger-tight only C

Remove the trolley jack


Tighten the engine support bolts C: 48 Nm
Refit the alternator
Removal
Refit the ancillary drive belt
Disconnect the battery
Refit the starter motor earth cable 35 Nm
Battery:
Refit the sparkprocedures
plugs for disconnection/reconnection
Use the special
Remove tool

Refit the the
Remove valve covercover

Tighten the coolant
Loosen the coolant pump
