CHAPTER 1. Introduction
1.1 Background and Rationale of the study
Handyman services are fix-up tasks that offers a wide variety of services for residential and
commercial property owners. In this business variety of services are derived depending on what
the business owner wants to provide.
The demand for handyman services in Africa and the rest of the world has been increasing
because of several influencing factors. According to The Startups Team (2015), demand for
handyman service jobs is credited to the increasingly busy lives that people lead. Finding enough
time to organize work with family and other commitments can be bothersome, and so more and
more people are looking for help with these jobs around their home, whether it is an easy task or
a major one. And also, according to central statistical agency, population of Addis Ababa in 2021
is around 5,005,524 and this contributes to the increase in the demand for the service.
This project primarily focused on home and office handyman maintenance services. This
business, the Pro Fix Handyman Business, will be engaged in electrical work, plumbing,
bathroom repairs and maintenance and so on. It will serve the demand for handyman service in
Addis Ababa and probably the neighboring cities in the near future.
Today we are living in a technologically advanced era where everything is accomplished through
smart phones using various platforms. According to Data Reportal – Global Digital Insights,
there were 21.14 million internet users in Ethiopia in January 2020 and the number of internet
users in Ethiopia is increased by 534 thousand (+2.6%) between 2019 and 2020. Due to
extensive applications of smart phones, all types of businesses are gradually shifting on latest
devices. Now a days demand could be made through just some clicks on smart phones and
required things are obtained at our door steps. That’s why this project aims to develop a platform
inform of a mobile solution that will facilitate the location of handyman services within a certain
specific location by making the process fast, easy and ensure quality delivery of services by the
handymen.

1.2 Statement of the problem
Locating handyman service providers is a challenging job especially when people travel and
moves to a new place because service providers are located across different areas and offer
different costs, quality and type of service that they provide. Another problem that exists is
determining quality services provided by these handymen who fall under the category of small
businesses. Potential clients often see these small businesses as lacking the ability to be able to
provide quality services. Also, as the service is an informal sector the service providers ask
money that they feel appropriate even if it is a large amount. This makes these services to be
more expensive and riskier in cases where poor services are provided and one must seek for
other handymen to do the same job.
1.4 Objectives

The objective of the proposed project is to provide good and quality Home and Office
Handyman Maintenance service to meet our customer’s needs.
To expand the operation of the business in the neighboring cities after 5 years.
To be the leading Handyman service provider in Addis Ababa and neighboring cities.

1.5 Scope and Limitation
This project study will be conducted within some areas of Addis Ababa. some handyman
services within various locations will be targeted. The mobile application will only be useful to
smartphone users running android operating system and the application is dependent on the
availability of internet connectivity for users to be able to send and receive data, hence Internet
connectivity is required for one to use the application. The other limitation is that people are
accustomed to use the informal handyman service that they get around their locality.

2.1 Name of the Business
The project will be named “Pro Fix Handyman Service Business” a memorable term for our
service which is Home and office Handyman Maintenance service.
2.2 Location
The Business will be located in the heart of Addis Ababa around stadium area. It is a convenient
area to reach the customer as fast as possible to every location whenever clients call or use the
Application to contact the office.
2.3 Mission
Pro Fix business will be committed to provide Professional, fast, and reasonably-priced
handyman service to the Addis Ababa and nearby community.
2.4 Vision
Pro Fix aims to be the leading handyman service provider in every location across Addis Ababa
through a mobile application to locate the services.
2.5 Services
As a handyman, Pro Fix will offer a wide range of home repair services. The services are
generally both minor and major tasks. Pro Fix will offer a professional job to develop a trust
bond with the customer so that the customer continues to use the service. Pro-Fix offers fix-it
services for: plumbing, electrical maintenance, and so on.

3.1 Project Methodology
This project will gather information from secondary data through Web search and will be using
Qualitative data collection technique via survey (paper surveys) to gather information from a
sample of people with the intention of generalizing the results to a large population.
The handyman industry competes with the contractor industry for home repair jobs. Handymen
are usually used for small items; contractors are usually needed for more extensive projects.
Customers will frequently call any kind of service provider they are accustomed with, regardless
of the appropriateness. Because of this, word of mouth recommendations will be very important.
Potential customers will ask neighbors/friends and others for recommendations on handyman
service providers. Pro-Fix will capitalize on word-of-mouth marketing by going the extra mile to
keep customers satisfied. Model service will result in new and repeat business.

3.5 Financial Feasibility
The source of financing will be from the bank loan and the rest will be provided by the
shareholders. The financial aspect of the business requires high cost to put up the project but a
good gain can also be expected.
