I SEM. M.TECH.( CAMDA) DEGREE END SEMESTER EXAMINATION

NOV./DEC. 2006

SUBJECT : ADVANCED MECHANICAL VIBRATION (MME-623)

REVISED CREDIT SYSTEM
(07/12/2006)
Time: 3 Hours. MAX.MARKS: 50

Instructions to Candidates:
™ Answering Q.No. 1 is compulsory and answer any FOUR of the
remaining questions.
™ Data not provided, may be appropriately assumed.
™ Assumptions made must be clearly mentioned.

1) i) For a multi degree freedom system. Rayleigh’s method

always gives higher value of natural frequency than the
actual. Why?
ii) In majority of the applications, velocity is considered as a
parameter to know the level of vibration. Why?
iii) To know the vibration of a machinery in terms of
displacement / velocity / acceleration, accelerometers are
preferred. Justify.
iv) The rotor specification G10 means ------------- .
v) For a rotating shaft, torsional natural frequency is greater
than lateral natural frequency. Justify.
vi) In forced vibration, force transmitted to foundation can be
minimized by ------------------- .
vii) A typical vibrating system theoretically has ----------- .
(one/two/infinite natural frequency / frequencies).
viii) Viscous damping present in most practical systems is -------
(less than 0.1/between 0.1 & 0.5/greater than 0.5).
ix) Natural frequency of accelerometer is likely to be ------------
(below 2 cps/between 2 & 100 cps/above 100 cps).
x) Fundamental torsional critical speed of I.C. engine is
increased by using hollow crankshafts. (Agree/Disagree
with this statement). (1x10)

2A) In a single degree damped vibrating system, a suspended mass of

8Kg makes 30 oscillations in 18 seconds. The amplitude decreases
to 0.25 of the initial value after 5 oscillations. Determine
i) Stiffness of the spring ii) Logarithmic decrement.
iii) Damping factor (03)

2B) A G20 rotor weighing 50N, is mounted at the centre of a horizontal
staff supported by short bearings at a distance of 600mm. Shaft
diameter is 30mm. Determine the range of speeds between which the
shaft should not be operated such that maximum bending stress not
to exceed 100 N/mm2. (07)

3A) Determine the total stiffness of the springs used for mounting a bench
grinder of mass 50Kg and rated speed of 2500rpm, so that force
transmissibility is equal to or less than 0.2. (03)

3B) In a fertilizer plant a section of pipe vibrated violently at a speed of

120 rpm. To eliminate this vibration, it was proposed to introduce a
dynamic absorber. In the first test an absorber weight of 20N tuned to
120rpm resulted in the system having a natural frequency of 96 cpm.
If the absorber is to be designed to have the natural frequencies
outside the range 80 to 160 rpm, what are the limiting valves of
absorber weight and spring stiffness. (07)

4) For the system shown in Fig. Q4, determine the approximate natural
frequency using the concept of iteration. Also clearly show as how
Cholesky factorization is carried out. Assume an appropriate initial
trial vector and carry out only one iteration. (10)

5A) Explain the significance and concept of simultaneous iteration

method. (05)

5B) Sketch and explain Piezoelectric & Electro-dynamic transducers. (05)

6) Explain the following:

i) Nonlinear vibration with reference to stiffness.
ii) Fourier analysis in vibration.
iii) Cambell diagram
iv) Rayleigh damping (2.5x4)
