Chapter 10 ... The Muslim World
The event in the life of Muhammad that signalled the beginning of Islam would be when the
angel Gabriel told Muhammad that he was the messenger of God. This signalled the beginning of
Islam as Muhammad went on to preach the message sent by Gabriel, whom he believed was
Allah speaking through Gabriel. This caused Muhammad to begin his journey and spread the
message of what Islam is and how to worship Allah.
3. Mecca was an important city in western Arabia as it contained the Ka’aba, a holy shrine that
was considered sacred in Arabia. People considered it to be a place of worship for Abraham as
well as a polytheistic shrine that housed as many as 200 idols in it.
4. The five pillars of Islam are faith, prayer, alms, fasting, and pilgramige. The faith refers to
Muslims having to state that “There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of
Allah.” Prayer refers to how Muslims must face toward Mecca to pray and that they may
assemble at a mosque in order to worship. The alms refer to giving charity to the poor through
special religious taxes. The fasting refers to Ramadan, the holy month with which Muslims must
fast from sunup to sundown and may only eat one meal throughout the whole month. The final
pillar, pilgrimage, refers to the trip to Mecca that must be taken at least once in their lifetime.
5. Muslims consider Jews and Christians to be people of the book as all three of these religions
have belief in the same god and that all three religions have a holy book that relates to the same
principles expressed in the Quran.
6. The beliefs and practices of Islam created unity amongst Muslims in the 600s as they all felt
that everyone was equal under the eyes of Muhammad. This caused each Muslim to be equal
within society and therefore brought unity upon Islamic society. Also, the development of Arabic
united all Muslims as the Quran was written in Arabic, so therefore communication amongst
Muslims became simpler.
7. The teachings of Islam are similar to Judaism and Christianity as Judaism, Christianity, and
Islam all have one god and all three religions have a holy book. The Jews have the Torah,
Muslims have the Quran, and Christians have the Bible.
8. Islam helped spread arabic culture as the Quran is written in arabic. This caused Muslims to
learn arabic, therefore promoting the spread of Islam. As more and more people learned arabic,
through the Quran. They were able to speak to one another more fluently and were able to spread
the findings they came up with, to others in their field.
9.
Greetings Muhammad,
Though you are long dead, your legacy has still continued. Islam has spread and become the
second largest religion in the world with over 1.8 billion followers. This has enabled you to be
considered as one of the most influential people on earth. Though you past away only 2 years
after founding Islam, the legacy of the religion has spread throughout the world. Your followers,
Muslims, have done great things for society, including preserving ancient Greek and Roman
works, developing algebra and other forms of math, and dabbling in experimental science vs
theoretical science.
Sincerely, Pranit Gunjal
