LESSON 1: INTEGRATIVE ART AS APPLIED TO CONTEMPORARY ART

LESSON OBJECTIVES
 Define and differentiate contemporary art and modern art;
 Determine the characteristics and elements of art and contemporary art; and
 Identify and differentiate the various contemporary art forms.

The Nature of Art

There are varied ways to define the nature and characteristics of arts. It is a concept which
basically provides color and substance to our everyday existence as humans. Life without art is
dull and without meaning. Art basically stimulates our senses and cognitive abilities as it allows
the expression of emotions and the subjective self.

DIY 1 (DO IT YOUR OWN!)

Direction: Secure the following materials and proceed with the steps.
1 white clean sheet of paper
1 Pencil or Pen

Step 1. Using a pencil or pen, illustrate/sketch how you feel at this moment.
Step 2. Capture the illustration and upload it to Activity 1 (folder)
Step 3. Provide a brief explanation of the illustration.

Art as defined in different ways:

- Plato

-Leo Tolstoy

- Eugene Venon

- Leonardo Da Vinci

TMLS (To Make the Long Story Short)

Art is a tangible manifestation and product of human activity that allows the expression of
individuality through a set of skills and is a means of communicating or conveying insights and
emotions.

SHS | MODULE 6
These are the basic elements that are used by Artists in creating Art; they are what you use to create
an aesthetically pleasing work. When we make Art, we need to understand and apply these SIX (6)
ELEMENTS OF ART.

1. Lines is an identifiable path created by a point

moving in space. It is one-dimensional and can vary in
width, direction, and length.

Also termed as “strokes” in digital art work marks the

distance between two points which is used for outlines
and implied lines in artwork and design. It has a width
called as “thickness” it has direction as well as length.

Lines also create a moving point or object which can

be straight, jagged, broken, dashed, diagonal, vertical,
horizontal, curved, parallel etc.

2. Shape is two-dimensional (2D) where a line

crosses over that creates a shape. It produces image
in a flat area according to how reality is represented.

3. Form includes shape and perceived volume.

To exemplify, a three-dimensional (3D) artwork has
depth, width and height.

4. Color is the element that is produced when light strikes an image. It is derived from the reflected
or absorbed light and definitely creates the mood of the artist.

5. Texture denotes the smoothness, ruggedness of the image or object.

6. Space may include the foreground,
middle ground, background and area
between the images or objects which may
be negative or positive. It is positive when
an area is occupied by an object or image
and it is negative when it covers the space
between, between and within the image or
object.

Is the art of the present, which is continuously in process or in flux.

came before Contemporary art. Most art historians and critics put the beginning of
modern art in the West around the 1860s, continuing up to the 1960s.

Whereas, contemporary art means art made in the present day. But it can be hard to define what the
‘present day’ really means.

Is that art made by living artists? Art made in our lifetimes? Or is it artists making work that references
or engages with the culture of the present day? Perhaps even artwork made in a way that defines what
the ‘present day’ is? So, the start date of contemporary art is, perhaps paradoxically, most often set
back in the 1960s and 70s.

Contemporary Art – Pays attention to the society.

Modern Art – is more self-expressive.

SHS | MODULE 8

surface for aesthetic value. It can be naturalistic, photographic,
representational, abstract, narrative and political.

images that projects illusions through the use of more advanced
camera features such as Retro photo effect, lomo effect. Vintage
photo effect, comic book photo effect etc.

 Architecture the art or practice of designing and constructing buildings. It is the art and
discipline of creating, or interfering an implied or apparent plan od a complex object or system.
