What are the differences of vocal music and instrumental music?
Vocal music is music made specifically for voices. It may be performed with or
without instruments while Instrumental music is made solely for instruments.
Sample Vocal and Instrumental Music:
INDONESIA
The Gamelan or Gamelan orchestra is the
most popular form of music in Indonesia. There are
many types of Gamelan but the famous Javanese
and Balinese Gamelan are the most famous. It
contains a variety of instruments such as
metallophones, xylophones, kendang (a two-headed
drum) and gongs; bamboo flutes, bowed and
plucked strings. Vocal music is used as
ornamentation of the Gamelan. It is as important
as gamelan. Pesindhen is a female soloist singer
who sings with a gamelan and Gerong refers to the
unison male chorus that sings with the gamelan.

PHILIPPINES
The original Malabon Musikong Bumbong
started as a plain “Banda de Boca” (meaning bibig
or mouth) in the 1890’s. Music or sound was
produced by one’s voice controlled with a piece of
leaf or paper placed between the lips. Mostly
composed of Katipuneros. Felix Ramos was bth the
founder and inventor of the bamboo instruments. It
uses woodwind instruments that are made of
bamboo. The shapes and the sizes are similar to
brass band instruments but have different sounds.
The common vocal music of the Philippines is
melodic chants usually heard in folk songs.

1. Learning the English translation of a certain foreign language would help you
understand more the song.
2. Getting into the rhythm. Although it doesn’t particularly help to keep repeating the
words by speaking them before you sing them. This can help anchor the unfamiliar
words so you don’t trip up over them when you come to link them with the tune.
3. Foreign language can be easier to remember. It might appear to be a difficult at
first, but if you don’t speak a particular language, the only way you can learn it is by
the sound of the words, one syllable at a time.
4. Be patient. It takes a long time to learn a song properly whether it’s in a foreign
language or not. Don’t let the unfamiliar words hold you up. The first time around you
might make lots of mistakes, but it will get gradually easier and more accurate.
5. Go to the source. There’s nothing better than hearing someone native sing the
foreign song you’re working on. Track down recordings
