Problem Solving (10 pts.)

Silicon has three isotopes, Silicon-28, Silicon-29 and Silicon-30, whose
percentage abundances are 92.21%, 4.70% and 3.09% respectively. The atomic
masses are 27.977 amu, 28.976 amu and 29.974amu respectively. Write the symbols
for the three isotopes of silicon and determine the relative atomic mass.
Isotope Mass Number Atomic Mass Percentage Relative
Unit Abundance Atomic Mass
28
Si 28 27.977 92.21%
14

29
Si 29 28.976 4.70% 28.086 g
14

30
Si 30 29.974 3.09%
14

Relative Atomic Mass

= ((27.977g * 92.21%) + (28.976g *4.70%) + (29.974g *3.09 %))/100%
= 28.086 g
Problem Solving (10 pts.)
IONIC COMPOUND – Calcium iodide
Step 1 (Atoms Involved) Calcium & Iodine
Step 2 (Chemical Symbol) Ca & I
Step 3 (Formed Ion) Ca+2 & I-1
Step 4 (Criss-cross multiply the charges) Ca-1 & I2
Step 5 (Remove the plus sign to determine the CaI2
chemical formula)

III- Solve for the Empirical formula of the Compound

A compound was analyzed and found to contain 13.5 g Ca, 10.8 g O, and
0.675 g H.  What is the empirical formula of the compound?
Given Known
13.5 g – Ca Atomic Mass Ca – 40.078
10.8 g – O Atomic Mass O – 15.999
0.675 g – H Atomic Mass H – 1.008

Solution:
Total mass of compound = 13.5 gCa + 10.8 go + 0.675 gH
Total mass of compound = 24.975 g

Percent Composition
Calcium = (13.5 g / 24.975) *100%
Calcium (%) = 54.054 %
Oxygen = (10.8 g/24. 975 g) *100%
Oxygen (%) = 43.243 %
Hydrogen = (0.675 g/24.975 g) *100 %
Hydrogen (%) = 2.703 %

Assume: 100 g of compound

54.054 gCa ; 43.243 gO ; 2.703 gH

Number of moles
Calcium; 54.054 gca x (1 molCa/40.078 gca )= 1.349 molCa
Oxygen; 43.243 gO x (1molO / 15.999 gO) = 2.703 molO
Hydrogen; 2.703 gH x (1 molH / 1.008 gH) = 2.681 molH

Mole ratio
Calcium; 1.349 mol / 1.349 mol = 1 mol
Oxygen; 2.703 mol / 1.349 mol = 2 mol
Hydrogen; 2.681 mol / 1.349 mol = 2 mol

Empirical Formula
CaO2H2
