Recycled Water
Wastewater is transformed into recycled water that can be used for many purposes which means no
freshwater supplies are used for this process. The process saves a huge amount of freshwater. Usually recycled
water is not used for drinking. The water can be used to wash cars and clothes in light industry, mixing
concrete in heavy industry and watering fields in agricultural farming.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there are four important factors for wastewater reuse –
water shortage, increased population, food security issues, and last but not least, increased air pollution and
water pollution in any place, for example, Malaysia. Water shortage and food security issues are happening
in poor African countries, while European countries have to keep pace with the growing number in population
each year.
Singapore is one of the many nations that uses recycled water, which is called “NEWater”. Though a small amount

e
of the reused water is channelled back to reservoirs for drinking water, most of the recycled water production is for
the high-tech industry in the country. NEWater is considered as a successful programme, as 82% of respondents
state that they drink the recycled water without a doubt, and another 16% only do so when mixed with reservoir

al
water. By 2060, Singapore’s National Water Agency plans to triple the NEWater capacity, which is at around 30%
of Singapore’s total use, to 50% in order to meet Singapore’s future water demand.
