Course: Introduction to Linguistics

COURSE OBJECTIVE

The course is designed to introduce students with the historical perspectives of English
Literature. Students will be given a brief overview of different literary movements of
different ages of English Literature. Students will become familiar with the history of English
Literature.

TEACHING TECHNIQUES

Project-based tasks are an effective way to create rich environment of learning. Students will
be given course related assignments to inculcate practical approach.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance will be given high priority. Students’ in time presence and departure will be
considered mandatory in the class.

COURSE CONTENTS

Course Content of ‘Introduction to History of English Literature’ covers different aspects of


Literary Eras. Break up of syllabus into different sessions is given below:

Introduction to Initial Literature

 Anglo-Saxon Period
 Anglo-Norman Period

General Background to Renaissance and Reformation

 Major Figures of Renaissance Period


 Elizabethan Drama, Prose and Poetry

 Definitions and brief introduction to linguistic levels of a language
(Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics, Pragmatics)

 Morphology
1-Morpheme, Morphs, Allomorphs
2-Free and Bound Morphemes
3-Lexical and Functional Morphemes
4-Inflectional and Derivational Morphemes
 Grammar
 Problems or Limitations of Traditional Grammar

Final Term Syllabus

Essay Writing
Introduction to essay, how to write an essay, brain storming, structure of essay, types of
essay.

Study Skills
Skimming and scanning, comprehension preis writing and intensive and extensive reading.

Presentation Skills
Use of content, style of presentation, pronunciation, pitch and audio visual aids etc.

CV and Job Application


Formats of writing CV and job applications.

EVALUATION
Course evaluation will be done through papers and assignments. The papers will comprise of
objective as well as subjective questions based upon practical application of students’
knowledge. Distribution of marks is as follows:
Mid Exam Paper: 15 Marks

Assignment: 05 Marks

Final Exam Paper: 25 Marks

Assignment: 05 Marks
