Instruction: Solve the following problems stated below. Avoid erasures, show your full solution by writing it in
your respective worksheets.
1. Electric Flux: Consider a flat sheet that is in the shape of a rectangle
with sides of lengths 0.400 m and 0.600 m. The sheet is immersed in a
uniform electric field of magnitude 75.0 N/C that is directed at from the
plane of the sheet as shown as the right. (a) Find the magnitude of the
electric flux through the sheet. (b) Determine the magnitude of electric
flux if the sheet was rotated in 91°. (c) If the sheet was increased by a
factor of 5. (50 points)
2. Electric Flux: A 2.0 cm x 3.0 cm rectangle lies in the xy-plane. What is the electric flux through the
rectangle if;
a. 𝐸⃗ = (100 𝑖̂ + 50 𝑘̂ ) N/C?
b. 𝐸⃗ = (-150 𝑖̂ + 50 𝑗̂ ) N/C?
c. 𝐸⃗ = (80 𝑖̂ - 73 𝑘̂ ) N/C?
d. 𝐸⃗ = (40 𝑖̂ + 64 𝑘̂ ) N/C?
(Hint: Express the unit vectors of 𝐸⃗ in terms of its magnitude) (50 points)
3. Electric Flux: The electric field ⃗𝑬𝟏 at one face of a parallelepiped is uniform over
the entire face and is directed out of the face. At the opposite face, the electric field
⃗𝑬⃗ 𝟐 is also uniform over the entire face and is directed into that face referring to the
right figure. The two faces in question are inclined at 30° from the horizontal, while
⃗𝑬
⃗ 𝟏 and ⃗𝑬
⃗ 𝟐 are both horizontal; ⃗𝑬𝟏 has a magnitude of 2.50 x 104 N/C, and ⃗𝑬𝟐 has a
magnitude of 7.00 x 104 N/C (a) What are the individual electric fluxes of the
parallelepiped? (b) What is the total electric flux? Is it zero or non-zero? (Hint: This is like the cube
example of electric flux) (50 points)
4. Gauss’s Law: A positive point charge q sits at the center of a hollow spherical shell. The shell, with radius
R and negligible thickness, has net charge -2q. Find an expression for the electric field strength (a) inside
the sphere, r < R, and (b) outside the sphere, r > R. In what direction does the electric field point in each
case? (c) What is the numerical value of the electric field if the q = 26.0 nC, and R = 32.0 m. (Hint: Always
draw a Gaussian surface) (50 points)
5. Gauss’s Law: A long, thin straight wire with linear charge density λ runs down the center of a thin, hollow
metal cylinder of radius R. The cylinder has a net linear charge density 2λ. Assume λ is positive. Find
expressions for the electric field strength (a) inside the cylinder, r < R, and (b) outside the cylinder, r >
R. In what direction does the electric field point in each of the cases? (c) What is the numerical value of
the electric field if the q = 19.0 𝜇C, and R = 31.0 m. (50 points)
6. Gauss’s Law: A uniformly charged, straight filament 7.00 m in length has a total positive charge of 2.00
𝜇C. An uncharged cardboard cylinder 2.00 cm in length and 10.0 cm in radius surrounds the filament at
its center, with the filament as the axis of the cylinder. Using reasonable approximations, find (a) the
electric field at the surface of the cylinder and (b) the total electric flux through the cylinder. (50 points)
7. Gauss’s Law: A small conducting spherical shell with inner radius a and outer radius b is concentric with
a larger conducting spherical shell with inner radius c and outer radius d at the figure at the next page. The
inner shell has total charge and the outer shell has charge +4q (a) Calculate the electric field (magnitude
and direction) in terms of and the distance from the common center of the two shells for
