MODULE 2: FUNCTIONS OF

COMMUNICATION

Objectives:
By the end of this module students will have completed the following
objectives:
 Understand the functions of communication
 Identify the speaker’s purposes; and
 Listen to sample oral communication activities

 Go to https://www.youtube.com/user/TEDtalksDirector/videos and
choose a speech on topic that interest you.

Five major functions of communication:
A. Control or Regulation
People communicate to manage the behaviors of other. This
communication comes in the form of policies and other written
materials which dictate how employees are to act in the
workplace.
B. Social Interaction
People communicate to connect with each other. Humans are social beings who
mingle in different settings.
C. Motivation
People communicate to encourage others to improve or become better.
D. Information
People communicate to share and gain ideas.
E. Emotional Expression
People communicate to express how they feel.

Activities
 Come up with ten rules on how to use soci al media
responsibly. Send your copy by submitting the link to your
teacher.
Your work will be assessed using the following criteria:
Relevant Content - 40%
Appropriate of Language - 30%
Grammar and Mechanics - 30 %

Total 100 %
 Go to https://www.youtube.com/user/TEDtalksDirector/videos and choose a
speech on topic that interest you. Write a 250-word essay on whether the
speaker effectively delivered his/ her piece through the use of his voice,
gestures, movements, and/or visual materials.
Submit the link where you have done your essay.
Apply the following format: Times New Roman, font size 12, 1.5 spacing, 1
inch margin on all sides
It will be assessed using the following rubric:
a. Content
b. Language
c. Adherence to requirements
Markings – 1 – 5
Scoring:
Poor -3 Very Good - 10 - 12
Fair -4–6 Excellent - 13 - 15
Good -7-9
