Social media has risen in today's society like a whirlwind, everyone seems to be a part of
some social media site from adolescence to adults. However, social media seems to have
influenced the lives of teenagers the most. According to Common Sense Media (2012,
"Introduction" section, para. 2) 90% of all American teens have used social media, three-
quarters of them have a social networking site, and nearly one in three teens will visit their
social networking sites a few times a day if not more. Teens are so engaged in social media that
it is of interest to teachers, and parents alike on what takes place while teens are on these sites.
Some teachers are excited about the new technology and learning that social media and
technology is bringing to the classroom. Others will look at the negative effects it brings on their
teens. Cyberbullying, discrimination, self-confidence and other issues that may arise while using
social media sites, they are also concerned of the teens well-being and that it stays intact. This
generation of teens is the first group that has gone through all their teen years with social
networking sites such as Facebook and twitter, my goal is to get a look at the teens own
personal feelings about the sites as well as in depth research on the topic. Social media can be
an extremely dangerous threat to teenagers from some of the other people using the social
networking sites. Cyberbullying has become a major epidemic among teens today. There are
many different forms of cyberbullying, such as ".sending harassing messages (via text or
Internet), posting disparaging comments on a social networking site, posting humiliating
pictures, or threatening/intimidating someone electronically" (Nixon 143). In January of 2014, a
fourteen-year-old boy of Ohio named Matthew Homyk took his life because of the awful effects
of cyberbullying (Dickey 40). It has become a major competition among the peers to see who
can get the most likes on picture or the most retweets on a tweet. Most of the teenagers are so
consumed into the social media world that they do not see any of the dangers or negative
effects that it can possess. In our world rightnow many teenagers got different perspective and
got different effects in terms of social medias. Teens are masters at keeping themselves
occupied in the hours after school until way past bedtime. When they’re not doing their
homework (and when they are) they’re online and on their phones, texting, sharing, trolling,
scrolling, you name it. Of course before everyone had an Instagram account teens kept
themselves busy, too, but they were more likely to do their chatting on the phone, or in person
when hanging out at the mall. It may have looked like a lot of aimless hanging around, but what
they were doing was experimenting, trying out skills, and succeeding and failing in tons of tiny
real-time interactions that kids today are missing out on. For one thing, modern teens are
learning to do most of their communication while looking at a screen, not another person. As a
species we are very highly attuned to reading social cues,” says Catherine Steiner-Adair, EdD, a
clinical psychologist and author of The Big Disconnect. “There’s no question teenagers are
missing out on very critical social skills. In a way, texting and online communicating—it’s not like
it creates a nonverbal learning disability, but it puts everybody in a nonverbal disabled context,
where body language, facial expression, and even the smallest kinds of vocal reactions are
rendered invisible.”According to a report released in 2021 by Common Sense Media on social
media’s effects on teens, about half of the 1,500 young people surveyed said social media is very
important for them in order to get support and advice, feel less alone, and express themselves
creatively, as well as for staying in touch friends and family while social distancing. And 43
percent said that using social media makes them feel better when they are depressed, stressed,
or anxious. Among LGBTQ youth, 52 percent said social media helps them feel better when they
are experiencing these difficult emotions.
I conclude that both the positive and negative impacts of social media on the youth. Going
with the former first, social media has reduced the world to a global village. Youth can interact
with people from other parts of the earth by just a click of the button. Through these
interactions, young people can share ideas, acquire information and also be exposed to many
opportunities out there. Secondly, social media give them the avenue and opportunity to make
new friends and also allows them to maintain their old friends. With social media, they can trace
their former friends by simply typing their names or just indicating the school they attended.
Apart from just socializing, the social networks have become frontiers for the corporate world to
advertise their goods and services. They may either do it directly or pay celebrities to advertise
their products for them. Therefore, social media offers an array of opportunities for youth. In
addition, they can earn a considerable amount of money by running podcasts and vlogs. Social
media is also an avenue that they can use to showcase their talents. Youth can also run
businesses through social media. They may share whatever goods and services they offer to
friends and in groups and for a wider coverage, they may sponsor their posts to reach more
people. It is also an avenue where people can express their honest opinions. People who are
naturally shy may say whatever they wish in public forums, without the fear of serious
repercussions. It is also a cheaper means of communication. What is required is just internet
bandwidth and a few keystrokes and users can communicate with virtually anyone on earth.
Social media has also made it possible for people to work from anywhere on earth. This is
referred to as virtual teaming. Though hired in the same organization, these virtual workgroups
are operate from different parts of the earth. However, their communication is done online.
