What goes on in the minds of teenagers when they engage with social media,
seemingly lost in their screens? It’s a question we as individuals often ponder
as we fret about the effects of social media on the youth well-being.
As social media use has expanded and evolved, concerns about its role in the
youth lives have grown as well. Linking social media use to technology
addiction, the decay of in-person social skills, and multiple harms to the youth
mental well-being make for good headlines but may obscure and confuse the
actual role of social media in the youth lives. This report is designed in part to
help shed light on some of those concerns. As technology becomes more
accessible, are youth preferences changing from face-to-face communication
to online interactions? To what degree are the youth occupied by social
pressures regarding how they present themselves online and how they
compare to others? How widespread is cyberbullying, and how the youth is
coping with it? Is social media contributing to or helping to alleviate
depression and loneliness among adolescents, and how has this changed, if at
all, over the past years?
The Project examines a Study on Social Media And Its Impact On Youth. It
talks about the Positive and Negative Impacts of Social Media and the Way
Forward to protect the youth in this Digital Age.
Many of the insights in the report are likely to challenge our notions of
whether social media is “good” or “bad” for youth. Because youth
involvement with social media is something many of us have personal
experience with, it can be difficult to step back and take an objective look at
what is happening in the world as a whole. Our own immersion in this world
can easily affect our ability to observe and understand social
media’s
broader role in society and in the lives of youth.

Social Media has reduced the world into a global village where people
can interact with each other just by a click of a button. Technology's
ability of widespread instantaneous connection has led to its usage in
social media and its use is among the most common activities of today's
youth which has a paramount impact on them. These sites offer today's
youth a medium for entertainment and communication but the problem
with the excess usage of social media is that today's youth is tomorrow's
future and we ought to be using the Internet to build ourselves, to be well
equipped with the skills and the knowledge required to build a utopia for
all but instead we are using it to destroy ourselves and each other.
Albert Einstein very rightly said, "I fear the day when technology will
surpass human interaction." This statement of his is very evident today
as we live in this Social Media era where we are more connected in social
media than our real life. The impact of social media on us shows how
we've evolved from apes to smartphone addicts. Active Listening and
Meaningful Connections and Interactions with open hearts and open
minds is the antidote to the problem which will help the youth
understand the effective and judicious utilization of social media. All
technologies have obvious benefits and potential harmful effects. As in
mostly everything in life, the key could lie in moderate use of social
media.
The following steps will be followed to complete the study:
1. Reviewing Websites, Blogs, Essays, Articles, Research Papers and
YouTube Videos related to the topic.
2. Writing the report based on the review. The report will cover
subheadings like Introduction, Manupalation of Users by Tech
Companies to Spend More Time On Their Devices, Effects Of Social
Media On Social-Emotional Well Being, How Social Media Effects
Stress?, The Dark Side Of Social Media, Positive Effects Of Engaging In
Social Media, Conclusion.

PROJECT REPORT

Introduction
Social Media is a phrase that gets thrown around a lot nowadays. It is an
interactive technology that facilitate the creation and sharing of information,
ideas, interests, and other forms of expression through virtual communities and
networks. The fast development of technology has brought about many
advantages of living in a connected world yet we feel that our relationships are
not meaningful which metaphorically means that we are suffering from social
isolation. Digital connections may offer us the illusion of companionship
without the demands of friendship and hence we would rather text than talk.

Manupalation of Users by Tech Companies to Spend

More Time On Their Devices
All the social media apps have a very carefully tailored algorithms which ensure
that we are hooked to our phones. They are made to be as addictive as possible.
To be humans means that you are persuadable in every single moment.
Engagement with social media and our cell phones releases a chemical called
dopamine. It is the exact same chemical that gives us instant gratification (ie.
makes us feel good) when we smoke, when we drink and when we gamble.
Those little tidbits of time when the youth think they have free time and using
their phones, they can actually add up to a pretty big number. A big chunk of
our day is spent on our phones. Our generation (a bunch of smart, talented, self
aware, hardworking, motivated individuals) are
constantly falling prey to these social media apps. If we
continually prioritize the social media apps over our long-
term goals which require patience, consistence, discipline
and actual effort, what arises is procrastination which is
fueled by the fact that we are addicted to our devices.

Effects Of Social Media On Social-Emotional Well

Being (Concept of ‘Filters’, ‘Highlight Reel’ and ‘Social
Currency’) – The expectation of Fame and the
Importance of Being Liked
Social media is great at providing that one thing that we all love ‘filters’. We
filter our very life before projecting it to the world, we show the happiest, the
best versions of ourselves, sometimes fake versions of ourselves out on social
media. People look like that they have a much better life than they really do.
Some of the happiest seeming people are actually some of the saddest people in
reality. Every youth today on social media has a highlight reel which is the
collection of his/her best and brightest moments. Social media is our own
personal highlight reel which is the cause of most teenagers insecurities today.
We are comparing our struggles and behind the scenes to other people highlight
reel.
The youth of today is vulnerable to social approval and use others as a mirror or
benchmark for how they should look, how successful they should be, or how
they should live. On Social media the likes, the comments, the shares has
become the form of social currency for which we ourselves are the product. We
are tying up our self worth with what others think of us.

How Social Media Effects Stress?

The entire generation of today don’t have the coping mechanism to deal with
stress. So, when significant stress starts to show up in their lives, the youth of
today lacking the skillset to ask for help, they are not turning to a person, they
are turning to social media which offers them temporary relief and when they
don’t have access to it or their phones, this stress very quickly turns into a social
anxiety that causes rational withdrawal symptoms.

The Dark Side Of Social Media

Technology’s ability of widespread instantaneous connection has opened the
doorway to cyberbullying and negative exposure of all kinds leading to anxiety,
addiction, violence, child pornography, depression and even suicide. In addition
to this the negatives of Social Media include:
• A Detriment to Work and/or School
• Lack of Privacy
• Users Vulnerable to Crime
• Spread of Misinformation / Fake News etc.
Social Media is a boon if it is used for the right purpose. It is very rightly said,
Don't be an audience to the world, Be a creator. Thus, Social Media as a
platform should be used to create and to express
ourselves and our talents. It depends on us how we
use it and the moment we start valuing ourselves,
the world starts valuing us.

According to the Teen Social Media Statistics 2022, below are some interesting
statistics regarding teenagers and their technology and social media usage.

• 85% of Americans own a smartphone (Source: Pew Research) & 95%

of American teens have daily access to a smartphone.
• 46% of teens report being online almost constantly (Source: Pew
Research)
• TikTok had a total of 78.7 million users in the United States as of 2021.
(Apps like this leads to short attention span of the youth which may be
a sign of an attention disorder or mental health condition.
• An average of 5+ billion snaps are created every day (Source: Snap,
Inc.)

A Study shows that an average person now

spends more time each day on their phone and
computer than they do sleeping.

Teens’ preference for face-to-face

communication with friends has declined
substantially, and their perception of social
media’s interference with personal
interactions has increased.

Positive Effects Of Engaging In Social Media

It’s well said that Positive anything is better than negative nothing so apart from
it’s negative impacts Social Media is quite beneficial and has a lot of positive
impact on youth. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter give teens and
young adults a sense of belonging and acceptance and connect people and
loved ones who feel isolated and marginalised. It’s all round effect was clear
during the pandemic. Social media inspires young people to develop new and
healthy habits by finding positive role models online. Social media has allowed
teens to develop a voice of advocacy. This can be a very positive influence when
exposed to the right outlets. A study has shown that young people who express
their opinions on social media experience increased well-being. It is a gateway
to talent as it provides students with a platform to share their creativity and
ideas and get an honest response from the audience so that they can better
shape their skills. Social media can be a vehicle for making an impact in the
community. It exposes them to essential issues not
only in their community but all over the world as well.

11

According to the Social Media, Social Life: Teens reveal their experiences
(2018) survey –

• Among 13- to 17-year-old social media users, percent who say using social
media makes them feel:

Teens are much more
likely to say social media
has a positive rather
than a negative effect
on how they feel.

• Social media is an important avenue of creative expression for many

teens - More than one in four teens (27 percent) say social media is
“extremely” or “very” important to them for expressing themselves
creatively.

12

CONCLUSION
The effects of digital technology on youth is important because these effects
will colour their adult behaviour and the way future societies will behave.
Values are the very foundation of our beliefs. These values can direct us to deal
with the problems mentioned above as well as guide us to decide exactly how
and what to use our social media for. We should be ourselves as the very fact
that nobody is us makes us perfect. A dedicated social media policy, safeguards
for inappropriate behaviour online, parental control, limits to screen time,
constant communication with kids, promotion of outdoor activities etc. can be a
way forward to protect the youth in this digital age.
