Ocean. The NE entrance, between Ujung Kanggalan (Oejoeng Kanggalan) on
Sumatera and Tanjung Pujut, the NW extremity of Jawa, is nearly 15.5 miles
wide; the SW entrance, between Cukuh Balimbing on Sumatera and Pulau
Panaitan N of the W end of Jawa, is about 52 miles wide. The charted features
at the entrance of the strait are radar identifiable at a distance of 35 miles.
The S coast of Sumatera, which farms the N side of Selat sunda, slopes
gently down to the sea; it densely wooded and has several high inland. Several
extensive indentations complete the S coast of Sumatera.
The W Jawa coast is not so high, and has a low coastal district over a great
portion of its length; it is densely wooded Sangiang, an island of irregular shape,
has a maximum length of about 2.2 miles. From distances 4 miles or less, and
when visibility is not particularly good, Sangiang appears as a number a small
islets. The hilly western side of the island attains a height of 154 m. A narrow
steep to reef fringers the north and east sides of the island; a reef, frequently
marked by surf, extend as far as ¼ mile from the south eastern shore. A rock
above water lies close off the western point of the island and another of the
southern point. A reef extends about 200 m from the middle of the southwestern
shore of the island.
Ular (Leneng) is steep-to rock lying about 1.5 miles northward of ASC jetty.
Ular is 47 m high and is covered with vegetation.
Pasir Brouwers is a formation of hard sand extending about 3 miles in
northeasterly direction parallel to the cost from a position nearly 2.5 miles
northeastward of Ular. The least depth over this shoal, 5.1 m, is near the
northeastern extremity.
Shoal, one with a depth of 4.6 m over it, lie about 400 m northward and
northeastward, respectively of Tandjoeng Leneng.

Anchorae can be taken by ship at 06-02.1 S & 105-54.1 E, SW off P.Ular
bearing 300o, distance 0.5 miles, but please consult with agent. The depth in this
area is about 20 m. The area is large with sufficient maneuvering and swinging
room for several ships of the size to be accommodated at the Anyer Terminal.
The tidal stream is strong in this area, the ship is advised to pay out
substansial amounts of cable in order to retain the anchor position. The bottom
is coral snd.
4. Winds – Weather
The SE monsoon prevails from April to September but does not attain any
great degree of constancy until August; it is particularly unsteady in daytime,
and variable winds are common. In August and September the monsoon blows
stronger and steadier, generally from SE and SSE, and particularly of Jawa coast
at night when the land breeze reinforces the monsoon. The NW monsoon arrives
at the end of November. This results in WSW winds in December. W winds in
January and WNW winds in February. Clouded skies and SW squalls are
frequent, the latter occurring generally during the NW monsoon and
accompanied by the thunder.
The rainfall corresponds with the monsoon, the NW monsoon month being
the rainer. February has the greatest rainfall, with September the least.
The state of the sea is generally rather rough; heavy swells are no
uncommon, particularly during the stronger period of the NW monsoon, when
the current is running counter to the prevailing wind. As a rule, the sea is calmest
in March, July and November.
7
The tide is rise small and tide is usually semi diurnal. Highest high water
level is 0.6 m from mean water level and lowest low water level is 0.6 m from
mean water level.
