One Saturday morning, a nine-year-old American girl and her Japanese mother visited an aquarium in New
York City. The little girl was fascinated by all the fish swimming in the aquarium tanks. She visited the aquarium
many times after that and learned everything she could about the ocean creatures that inhabited it.
That little girl was Eugenie Clark, and her first visit to the aquarium occurred over 75 years ago. She grew
up to become the “Shark Lady,” famous for her knowledge of sharks. Clark’s knowledge came from her
observations of sharks in the ocean where they lived naturally. She learned how to scuba dive so she didn’t have
to watch them in an aquarium tank. In the ocean, she could swim right next to them or even ride them. Once, she
rode a 12-meter whale shark.
Clark not only swam with fish, she also went to college to learn more about them. In 1940, it was unusual
for a woman to get a doctorate degree in natural science. But she had a great passion for her work, and she didn’t
let anything stop her.
Clark has dedicated her life to studying, writing, and teaching about fish, especially shark. Even now in her
eighties, she continues to dive to learn more about the 370 species of sharks. One of her favorite sharks is the
lemon shark, which is a good student and can be trained. Humans are not the only one to learn from Eugenie
Clark.
