    Name two (2) things that represent Western and Eastern Concept / Perspective of

    the Self.

    Eastern culture emphasizes cooperation, teamwork, common interests, unity,


    custom, and the public good, believing that a human being is a social creature and an
    intrinsic component of society while Western culture is centered on individualism or
    individualistic culture, which means it places a strong emphasis on the individual.
    They highlight the value of equality, even if they believe that the individual may rise
    above everything else; they competitively approach everything.

    When it comes to adolescence in Western society, there is a tradition that states


    that western teenagers who have reached the right age should be separated from
    their parents to live alone. Adults in Western cultures are geared toward promoting
    their achievement, often in comparison to others, thus children in Western cultures
    are encouraged to acquire and respect a sense of personal self and to perceive
    themselves as largely independent from the others around them. That’s why most
    people who grew up in western countries prefer not to be disturbed and prefer to do
    what they want more because they want to have complete freedom to decide, choose,
    or do something on their own. People from Western cultures generally prefer to "do
    their own thing," prefer to live their lives independently, and base their happiness and
    self-worth on their achievements. Westerners are also recognized for being
    competitive, goal oriented, and self-centered in all they do as a result of this tendency;
    they are always striving to improve or become more well-known. In summary,
    Western societies put a priority on self-interest. That’s why you can see that majority
    of western people are well-known in history, having led ancient world discovery
    expeditions.

    Children in East Asian cultures are encouraged to prioritize harmonious social


    interactions with others, with the dominating norms relating to group cohesion,
    connectedness, and family obligation and responsibility. East Asian cultures say they
    are very concerned about the interests of others, including their close friends and
    coworkers. In eastern culture, everyone in society is expected to play a part in
    meeting the needs and achieving the goals of the entire society, not just an individual.
    Cooperation or group progress is more significant in eastern culture, and it is more
    imprinted in the mind of eastern people that they are more likely to be together. The
    research found that East Asians were more likely than Westerners to experience
    happiness as a result of their social connections. Furthermore, Eastern culture
    centers on studying the inner world of a human being, believing that the universe and
    its existence is a never-ending cycle journey with no limitations, based mostly on
    Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism, Islam, Taoism, and Zen. Based on this
    worldview, eastern people tend to be conservative, reserved, and responsible,
    whereas western people tend to be liberated and open-minded.

    Reflecting the eastern culture such as; the existence of strong family ties in Asian
    countries, even people who have their own family already are still living with their
    parents under the same roof, the circle of friends in Asia, where the mentality is that
    the larger the group, the better. This prove that they deal with everything through
    collaboration. But, while group emphasis is beneficial, I believe this is unattractive in
    individualism because we are accustomed to working in groups, supporting each
    other, that’s why it might be difficult for eastern people to achieve progress as
    individuals.
