NATURAL DISASTERS HAPPENDED IN THE PHILPPINES

1. Naga Landslide

On September 20, 2018, a landslide caused by heavy rainfall and quarrying operations by Apo Land and
Quarry Corporations (ALQC) in Naga, Cebu, Philippines, killed 78 people. Five others are missing This is
the second deadly landslide to occur in the country in five days; the first occurred in Itogon, Benguet, in
September 15, triggered by Typhoon Mangkhut ("Ompong"), leaving at least 35 dead.
2. Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda (November 2013)
Typhoon Haiyan, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Yolanda, was one of the most
powerful tropical cyclones ever recorded. On making landfall, Haiyan devastated portions of
Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines.
3. Typhoon Glenda
Typhoon Rammasun, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Glenda, was one of the only two
Category 5 super typhoonson record in the South China Sea, with the other one
being Pamela in 1954. Rammasun had destructive impacts across the Philippines, South China,
and Vietnam in July 2014. 

This typhoon also destroyed the Calumpang Bridge of Batangas Province.


4. Taal Volcano Eruption, Batangas (January 2020)

The eruption of Taal Volcano in Batangas, Philippines on January 12, 2020, was a
phreatomagmatic eruption from its main crater that spewed ashes across Calabarzon, Metro
Manila, and some parts of Central Luzon and Ilocos Region, resulting in the suspension of school
classes, work schedules, and flights in the area. 
5. Mt Pinatubo Eruption, Pampanga (1991)

The 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines' Luzon Volcanic Arc was the second-
largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century, behind only the 1912 eruption of Novarupta in
Alaska.
6.Bohol Earthquake 2013

The 2013 Bohol earthquake occurred on October 15 at 8:12:31 PST in Bohol, an island province located


in Central Visayas, Philippines. The magnitude of the earthquake was recorded at Mw 7.2, with epicenter 6
kilometers (3.7 mi) S 24° W of Sagbayan, and its depth of focus was 12 kilometers (7.5 mi). It affected the
whole Central Visayas region particularly Bohol and Cebu. It was the deadliest earthquake in the
Philippines in 23 years since the 1990 Luzon earthquake. The energy released by the quake was
equivalent to 32 of the bombs dropped in Hiroshima
7.Batangas Esrthquake

According to Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), a magnitude 6.0


earthquake struck Mabini, Batangas at 3:09 PM. Intensity VII was recorded in Mabini, Batangas while
varying intensities were monitored in other places in Batangas, Cavite, Oreintal Mindoro, Bulacan, Metro
Manila, Quezon, Pampanga and Camarines Norte. Several aftershocks were monitored after the
earthquake, however PHIVOLCS issued a no tsunami advisory from this incident.
8. Marawi Battle

The Battle of Marawi (Filipino: Labanan sa Marawi), also known as the Siege of


Marawi (Filipino: Paglusob sa Marawi )and the Marawi crisis (Filipino: Krisis sa
Marawi) was a five-month-long armed conflict in Marawi, Lanao del Sur, Philippines, that
started on May 23, 2017, between Philippine government security forces and militants
affiliated with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), including the Maute and Abu
SayyafSalafi jihadist groups The battle also became the longest urban battle in the modern
history of the Philippines.
9. Mayon Eruption 2018

On January 13, 2018, at 4:21 PM (PST), a phreatic eruption occurred that propelled a grayish
steam and ash plume approximately 2500 meters high that drifted to the southwest side of the
volcano.
