1 Abadecio 2018 Naga, Cebu landslide - Softened limestone and soil due to days of heavy monsoon caused a landslide last September 20, 2018 that killed 29 people, days after
Typhoon Ompong

2 Arnaez December 2004 Quezon Province Landslide

Numerous landslides, triggered by severe rainfall caused by successive typhoons especially Typhoon Winnie, occurred at the town of Real and debris flows affected the
towns of Infanta and General Nakar. The estimated casualties of the heavy rains and landslides were over 1,068 dead, 1,061 injured, and 500 missing.

3 Badua 2012 New Bataan (Compostela Valley) debris flow

December 4, 2012 when flow of mud, boulders and gravels rushed towards brgy Andap due to rains brought by typhoon Pablo wherein at least 128 died and 450 went
missing as the village was buried under the debris.

4 Belmonte 1999 Cherry Hills Landslide- On August 3, 1999 heavy rain induced by typhoon Ising (Olga) spelled disaster for residents of Cherry Hills Subdivision in Antipolo City, houses
went down along with landslide and death toll climbed up to 66. Geologists said that aside from the typhoon, certain geological traits of the subdivision were vulnerable and
structural interventions averted the disaster.

5 Binwag On November 25, 2006, an intense tropical cyclone called “Durian” hit the Philippines, blowing away houses, uprooting trees and taking the lives of at least 720 people. Due
to heavy rainfall, Legazpi City had to fight widespread flooding while mudslides from the Mayon Volcano buried many villages, causing another 800 to 1,000 casualties. All in
all, Durian caused the death of almost 2,000 people while hundreds more remained missing. Damages in the Philippines was put at $130 million (97 million euros).

6 Caringal Sinkhole in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental (July 2014) - Six people have reportedly fallen into a 12 feet deep sinkhole that suddenly appeared in the middle of a
basketball court in Purok Jalandoni, Barangay Oringao in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental in July 2014. MGB said the hole may have been created by water flowing
underground. They considered this as a geological hazard.

7 Claravall The spillway of the Dizon Copper Silver Mines Inc. in Zambales collapsed September 11, 2002, flooding low-lying villages with mine wastes and other chemicals. At least
250 families in Barangays Buhawen, Sta. Fe and Poblacion were evacuated to safer grounds shortly after the spillway burst at 1 p.m. at the height of a strong downpour.

8 Cruz 2014 Catbalogan Landslide

23 people died on December 30, 2014 in a landslide that hit 5 barangays in Catbalogan City in Samar. The landslide happened in the midst of heavy rains brought by
Tropical Storm Seniang, that loosened the soil in landslide-prone areas, most notably in Barangay Mercedes.

9 Cudilla 2003 Panaon Island (Southern Leyte) debris flow

A low pressure area brought nonstop rain to Panaon Island at the tip of Southern Leyte on December 19, 2003. Evening that day, loose soil, boulders, and debris
rolled down towards houses in Barangay Pinut-an in San Ricardo town, and in Sitio Lutao (Barangay Poblacion) and Barangay Punta in Liloan town. Authorities reported
154 people dead in Panaon Island due to the landslides.

10 Dalugdog Typhoon Angela (1995) , known in the Philippines as Typhoon Rosing, was a catastrophic Category 5 super typhoon with 260 mph sustained winds. Angela caused
10.829 billion Philippine pesos of damage with approximately 900 fatalities. It triggered mudslides, flash flood and dam failure that resulted to flooding in the Central
Philippines. It was the strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines since 1970. The name Rosing has been used in the Philippines by PAGASA for nine tropical cyclones in the
Western Pacific but was retired ever since because of the destruction it made in 1995

11 Del Rosario A landslide in the area of Tampakan, South Cotabato, happened on August 2011, which resulted to 4 fatalities and 2 injuries, and the illegal mining area is within
the mines development site of Sagittarius Mines, which is planning to extract huge copper and gold deposits in the area. The victims were allegedly involved in
illegal “banlas” or sluice mining, a method which employs the pouring of large amounts of water on a mountain’s surface to extract the rocks containing the
gold ore. “Banlas” mining has reportedly become rampant in the mountains of Tampakan in the past two years.

12 Dela Cruz 2018 Cordillera Landslide

 The wrath of Typhoon Ompong caused a massive landslide in Cordillera Administrative Region. In the village of Ucab, rescuers have dug out 11 bodies from a muddy mound
covering two small-scale mining bunkhouses and a former miners' bunkhouse.

13 Delos Reyes 2012 Central Visayas Earthquake

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake with an epicenter near the town of Tayasan in Negros Oriental occurred on February 6, 2012 and rocked the Visayas. It caused a landslide which
buried a barangay, damaged 15,483 houses, and a total damage of P383 million on infrastructures and buildings was recorded. A total of 51 people died, 62 still missing, and
112 were injured.

14 Desuasido Aug. 8, 2007 Masara, Maco, Compostella Valley, Philippines Landslide

The Tropical storm “Chedeng” triggered landslides that kill at more than 10 people and bury seven houses in the southern gold mining town of Maco.

15 Echano 15 June 1991 during the eruption of Mount Pinatubo, Typhoon Yunya (Diding) with its center passing about 75 km north of the volcano - caused large amount of rainfall in the
region that triggered lahar flows. Pyroclastic surges poured from the summit, reaching as far as 16 km (9.9 mi) away from their origin point

16 Escalante October 31, 2018 Mountain Province landslide

Typhoon Rosita (Int'l name: Yutu) triggered a massive landslide that buried nearly 30 persons inside the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) building in
Natonin, Mountain Province. Mud, rocks and boulders totally covered the building, which allegedly served as an evacuation center for an undetermined number of villagers
and DPWH personnel on duty. The said typhoon cut a path just south of the previous month's Typhoon Ompong thus triggered more deadly landslides.

17 Estorninos
A massive storm surge was generated by the November 2013 Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). Yolanda struck Leyte Island at near peak strength, with maximum sustained wind
speeds of 160 knots, the strongest in the recorded history of the Western North Pacific. The weather system approached land very quickly, with a forward speed of 41 km/hr
as it reached Leyte, which was also one of the fastest among typhoons in the past 6 decades. As a result, Yolanda caused the largest storm surge in the recorded history of
Philippines. Storm surge field surveys recorded a maximum inundation height of 7m at Tacloban, located at the northern end of Leyte Gulf.

18 Herras November 15, 1994- last recorded tsunami in the Philippines that actually caused loss of life (41 fatalities) occurred in the Verde Island Passage (between Batangas & Mindoro
Island, affecting Puerto Galera) originating from a ML7.1 earthquake, 11km West of the Baco Islands. Tsunami waves were measured 6 to 8.5 meters high and 250 meters
inland in areas that faced the earthquake epicenter.

19 Jalac 2010 Mindanao earthquake

The 2010 Mindanao earthquakes occurred in the southern Philippines in the Moro Gulf. This was a complex sequence of events including three main events of Mw magnitude
7.3 or greater on the 23rd of July, and two significant aftershocks of magnitude 6.6 on the 24th and 29th. All of these were deep focus earthquakes, at depths from 565 km

20 Lansangan On March 5, 2002, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurred at sea, approximately 75 miles west of General Santos, Mindanao. The epicenter was located near the Cotabato
Trench. The earthquake was responsible for 15 deaths and roughly 100 injuries. It also created local tsunamis reaching a maximum wave height of 3m at Kiamba, Maitum and
Palimbang.

21 Manalansan 7.2 quake jolts Mindanao, triggers tsunami scare

December 29, 2018 - A major undersea earthquake measuring 7.2-magnitude on the Richter scale rocked Mindanao before noon Saturday, prompting mothe issuance of a
tsunami warning off the coasts of the Philippines and neighboring Indonesia. Phivolcs recorded the powerful quake, initially measured as a 7.1-magnitude tremor, at around
11:39 a.m. Saturday. Its epicenter was located at 162 kilometers southeast of Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental and its depth was measured at 49 kilometers, thus the
strong shaking. Phivolcs said it was tectonic in origin, which is caused by ground shaking primarily due to the sudden movement in the earth’s plates.

22 Marrero October 2015 Sinkhole in Benguet

A 150m wide sinkhole swallowed 5 houses in Itogon Benguet specifically in the old mining area of Benguet Corporation. A team of MGB geologists concluded that the sinkhole
was due to a ‘piping gully’ (develops when rainwater penetrates natural openings and man made tunnels) caused by Typhoon Lando. The team also found geological
weaknesses that can be traced back to the 1990 Luzon earthquake and and signs of water saturated cavities below the area.

23 Naboye Guimaras Island Oil Spill (August 11,2006) (Event-Oil Spill; Where: Coast of Guimaras Island)
Solar 1 tanker was hit by a hard rainstorm and sank off.About 2100 tons of heavy oil spilled from the tanker polluting about the 200 km of shoreline from Guimaras Island to
Panay Island and Negros Island. A large extent of shoreline in Guimaras experience particularly bad pollution, and the coastal fisheries were seriously damaged. Over 450
 hectares of protected mangroves with complex topography at Guimaras were also contaminated.

24 Ngaosi November 2012- CITINICKEL MINES and DEV”T CORPORATION = The SILT SPLILL in Toronto Nickel Mine in Narra, Palawan polluted the Pinagduguan River and
affected 6.8 hectares of farmlands. The Environmental Management Bureau issued on Nov. 26, 2012 a cease-and-desist order for the use of the compromised tailings pond.

25 Pabas 2017 Surigao Earthquake -On 10 February 2017, a magnitude (M5) 6.7 earthquake struck the Province of Surigao del Norte in Mindanao. The epicenter was located in Surigao
Strait 16 km offshore northwest of Surigao City at a shallow depth of 10 km. The earthquake was generated by the movement of the Philippine Fault - Surigao segment.

26 Petalcorin Pantukan Landslide in Mindanao , January 5, 2012 disaster. 25 people were killed when the landslide struck a gold mine site near the town. All the conditions were present in
making this mining community prone to landslide - steep slopes, rugged land, and poor vegetation.

27 Rojas 2017 Biliran landslides

On December 16, 2017, 4 towns in Biliran province were affected not only by rains brought by Tropical Storm Urduja (Kai-tak) but also by landslides. At least 42 people died
in Naval, Caibiran, Biliran, and Almeria, while 14 others were missing.The MGB said many factors – like the very high slope gradient in the affected areas and unstable grounds
due to road development, farming, and poor drainage systems – mainly contributed to the landslides,

28 Sayen The 1991 flash flood that devastated Ormoc City

On November 5, 1991, Typhoon Uring bore down on Leyte, wreaking havoc and burying the eastern and western plains of the province in water, sediment, and debris, where
in just 15 minutes, waters rose by 7 feet and when the waters receded, left behind 2 feet deep of sediment. The soil in the Ormoc watershed exceeded its capacity to hold
water, while the central part of the island of Leyte, classified as volcanic terrain, has soil that is susceptible to erosion.

29 Sebolino Category 5 Super Typhoon Bopha, the world’s worst storm of 2012, formed abnormally close to the Equator. Its torrential rains generated an enormous debris flow in the Mayo
River watershed that swept away much of Andap village in New Bataan municipality, burying areas 15 under rubble as thick as 9 meters and killing 566 people

30 Sumangil 2018 Itogon, Benguet landslides. Typhoon Ompong brought heavy rains in northern Luzon. Atleast 58 people have been reported dead. The landslide was caused due to
the texture of the soil and the mountain’s steep slope.

31 Taguibulos December 29 2018 Typhoon Usman struck the eastern part of the philippines causing 122 casualties in the mountainous Bicol region and samar mostly due to landslides and
flash floods.

32 Vinoya A magnitude 6.2 Earthquake hits Negros Occidental and neighboring provinces at 4:47 am on July 12, 2011. The earthquake’s epicenter is located at 72 km S42W of
Cauayan, Negros Occidental. According to PHIVOLCS the earthquake was caused by the movement of the Negros Trench. Two aftershocks were also recorded; 5.7 and 5.5
magnitude at 5:03 am and 5:05 am, respectively. The earthquake’s intensity was highest in Sipalay City at Intensity V.

33 Zaballero A DPWH Second Engineering District building in Natonin, Mountain Province located in a landslide-prone area was buried in a landslide last October 30, 2018 with at
least 12 bodies recovered. The landslide was triggered due to the heavy rains brought by Typhoon Rosita.

1 Abadecio The official journal of GSP is the “The Philippine Geologist”.

2 Arnaez January 11-14 1967 was when the Society sponsored the “2nd Geological Convention and First Symposium on the Geology of the Philippines and Neighboring Countries”
that was held in Manila. It was an exchange of ideas and information regarding a deeper understanding of the mineral resources of the country.

3 Badua Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) was reorganized on June 10,1987 under Executive Order No 192, otherwise known as Reorganization Act of
Department of Energy and Natural Resources.

4 Belmonte The Philippines will host the next GEOSEA XV1 on 2020.
5. Binwag The Geological Society of the Philippines was organized on VJ Day, September 2, 1945.

11 Del Rosario Dr. Mario Aurelio, 2002 GSP president, is also a member of the Legal and Technical Commission (LTC) of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) in Kingston, Jamaica.
He also co-wrote a book on the geology of the Philippines together with Mr. Rolando Peña, published in 2004, where he focused on the tectonic history of the Philippines.

12 Dela Cruz “The fifteenth Regional Congress on Geology, Minerals and Energy of Southeast Asia (GEOSEA XV)” was held 16-17 October 2018, at Hanoi with Pre and Post convention
field trips on 13-15 and 18-21 October 2018, respectively.

13 Delos Reyes November 3, 1976- GSP was accredited by PRC as the professional organization of geologist in the country.

14 Desuasido The MGB published The Geology of the Philippines 1st Edition in 1981 for the overview of the Geology of the Philippines. And the 2nd edition comes at an opportune time
when Philippines has become once more a beehive of activities by geologists owing to the efforts of government to promote the revitalization of the mining industry and
was published in 2010 to fill the gaps on stratigraphic data of local areas in the Philippines which is edited by Mr. Aurelio and Mr. Pena (President of GSP in 1997 and

15 Echano The Department of Energy (DOE) was created by then President Marcos as he issued Presidential Decree No. 1206 which created the Ministry of Energy and attached
the National Power Corporation and Philippine National Oil Company to this new agency.

16 Escalante Dr. Carlo Arcilla, 2015 GSP president, is the founder and now the head of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI), and is also the pioneer of nuclear studies here
in the Philippines.

17 Estorninos The GSP By-Laws was adopted and approved by the majority of the members of the Society on November 16, 1966 and was signed on November 18, 1966.

18 Herras Atty. Wilfredo G. Moncano, former Officer-In-Charge of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Regional Office No. XI, formally sits as head of the MGB as Acting
Director effective Monday, July 10, 2017.

19 Jalac Dr. Raymundo Santiago Punongbayan was the former director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). Punongbayan became popular after
handling two well-known calamities, the July 16, 1990 Luzon earthquake and the 1991 Pinatubo eruption.

20 Lansangan In commemoration of its 14th year of existence, the Geological Society of the Philippines launched its first geological convention in Manila during the period January 9 –
11, 1958. Delegates from the geological societies of Japan, Nationalist China, United States, Australia and Southern Korea attended.

21 Manalansan The Mines and Geosciences Bureau dates back during the Spanish regime, known as the “Inspeccion General de Minas." It took charge of the administration and disposition

23 Naboye The Society sponsored in Congress House Bill 401 and worked continuously for several years until it was finally enacted and passed into law last June 19, 1965. Known
as Republic Act 4209, it regulates the practice of the geology profession in the Philippines. Article I, Sec. 2 of said law provides that the members of the Board of
Examiners for Geologist shall be appointed by the Geological Society of the Philippines

24 Ngaosi Arturo Alcaraz (1916-2001) was a Filipino volcanologist who specialized in geothermal energy development. Born in Manila, Alcaraz is best-known as the Philippines'
"Father of Geothermal Energy Development" due to his contributions to studies about Philippine volcanology and the energy derived from volcanic sources.

25 Pabas PHIVOLCS was headed by Raymundo Punongbayan from 1982 to 2003, and it is currently headed by Renato U. Solidum Jr. from 2003 to the present.

26 Petalcorin The other predecessor to PHIVOLCS, the Commission on Volcanology (COMVOL) was created on June 20, 1952 by Republic Act no. 766 after the disastrous eruption of

27 Rojas Dr. Benjamin S. Austria, 1987 GSP President, was recognized as the Outstanding Professional in the Field of Geology for 2001 by the Professional Regulation Commission

28 Sayen Mr. Rolando Peña authored the Lexicon of Philippine Stratigraphy, published in 2008; and Geology of the Philippines, volume two, published in 2004; and was president

# NAME WEEK 3 - INDUSTRIAL USES OF ELEMENTS

1 Abadecio Molybdenum is used as lubricant additive. Due to its high melting point, molybdenum performs incredibly well under very high temperatures

2 Arnaez Tellurium is used in alloys, mostly with copper and stainless steel. It increases the resistance of lead to acids. It is used to vulcanise rubber, to tint glass and ceramics, in
solar cells, in rewritable CDs and DVDs and as a catalyst in oil refining.

3 Badua Strontium (Sr) is used to make special glass for televisions but is best known as the brilliant red salts used in fireworks and flares.

4 Belmonte Lanthanum (La) This element is used in camera and telescope lenses. Compounds containing lanthanum are used extensively in carbon lighting applications, such as
studio lighting and cinema projection
5 Binwag Cerium is used in catalytic converters in cars, enabling them to run at high temperatures and playing a crucial role in the chemical reactions in the converter.

6 Caringal Zirconium (Zr) is used as an anti-corrosion compound in pumps and valves. It does not absorb neutrons, so it is also widely used in nuclear reactors.

7 Claravall Fluorine is commonly used -- in its elemental form -- as rocket fuels. It has a working similar to oxygen and helps oxidizers in the rocket fuel to burn.

17 Estorninos Sulfur (S) is a mineral found in the ground around volcanic craters and hot springs and occurs naturally in some plants, including grains, fruits and vegetables. Protein
foods also contain sulfur, which may put vegetarians at risk for developing a sulfur deficiency. The mineral helps form muscles, hair and skin cells.

18 Herras Silver (Ag) is a soft, shiny metal which is the most conductive metal of all elements and is industrially used for jewellery, silverware, coins, dentistry, and photo films.

19 Jalac Samarium looks and behaves like most other metals, but it has relatively few uses. One of the most important is in the manufacture of very powerful magnets. Compounds
of samarium are also used to color glass and in television tubes.

20 Lansangan Iridium (Ir) is the most corrosion-resistant material known. It is used in special alloys and forms an alloy with osmium, which is used for pen tips and compass bearings.

 26 Petalcorin Hafnium is a good absorber of neutrons and is used to make control rods, such as those found in nuclear submarines. It also has a very high melting point and because
of this is used in plasma welding torches.

27 Rojas Silicon is a commonly used as a semiconductor in electronics: devices such as transistors, printed circuit boards and integrated circuits make use of silicon's properties
to achieve maximum performance.
